Pannell, Alex Hurdle, Craig Jones, and Paul Lorick now!

......................................................................................................

the spiritual opportunities were part of the reason I felt at home at Notre
Dame.”

Others considered: “I was also considering Army, Navy, Yale,
Penn, Dartmouth, Michigan, Princeton, and High Point. That is about it.”

If deciding so early took pressure off of him: “I made it my sophomore year and
some people think that it takes the pressure off of you. I knew it was just a
verbal commitment and I had to keep getting better if I wanted to earn a spot at
Notre Dame or help my high school team. I always had to keep increasing.”

......................................................................................................

Reservoir running back Craig Jones

Recruiting: “Nope, not yet.”

Maryland and West Virginia. Maryland is close to home and my two favorite
players both went to West Virginia.”

Cincinnati, Harvard, and a few other schools.”

College visits: “I haven't
had a chance to do any college visits. I will be doing that more in the spring
and in the summer.”

lot because they are my home state school. I also like Miami and South Carolina
too.”

......................................................................................................

St. Mary's Ryken offensive lineman Matthew Hunt

town school. I also like Penn State and especially Rutgers.”

University of Delaware for game day visits.”

Schools recruiting him the
hardest: “It has been Delaware. We go back and forth. There is also a Division
III college, St. Vincent.”

The recruiting situation at Delaware: “I do
not know the situation. I asked their coach about an official visit and he said
he was trying to find a date in January.”

A favorite: “I don’t have a
favorite. I just want to find the place where it feels most like home.”

His college position: “I would say running back or a blocking full back.”

Friday afternoon and thirty people showed up. They were talking about the
devotion that this team had and it really stood out to me.”

strong connection between them. I felt it as a recruit when I was there.”

Virginia.”

Boston College. I’ve also visited a spring practice at Penn State.”

Upcoming trips: “I think upcoming I’ll probably be going to Boston College and
back up to Penn State.”

A favorite college growing up: “It is the
University of Georgia. I visited the college when I was in elementary school and
I fell in love with the school. I have come to find that they are really a good
football team and Mark Richt is a really good coach.”

Maryland, West Virginia, Nebraska, Old Dominion, Virginia Tech, Western
Michigan, Penn State, and Michigan.”

Visits: “I have been to any colleges
right now. Hopefully there will be some soon but I’ll have to talk to my dad
about that one.”

A favorite school growing up: “It has been the Florida
Gators. When I was younger, I liked their speed and their game plan. They’ve
been down lately but I’m not going to beat them up and say that they are not my
favorite team.”

......................................................................................................

Patuxent running back Rafiq Douglas

Recruiting: “There are a lot of Ivy League schools talking to me like Harvard
and Princeton. Temple still sends me stuff and then there are a lot of schools
like Lehigh, Towson, and some other ones.”

Offers: “I have three right
now. I have one form Fordham, UCONN, and the University of Buffalo.”

Officials: “I’ve talked about it with Fordham but we haven't decided on a date.
They are in the playoffs too so it will be a little later on.”

Schools
close to offering: “I think Rutgers and Temple are probably close and will
probably offer. Also Wake Forest because they keep in touch.”

“Honestly I don’t have one. I’m letting all the options soak in before I really
think about it.”

......................................................................................................

Suitland linebacker Anthony Jackson

Still committed to Delaware: “Yes sir I am.”

If he is still hearing
from others: “I’m still hearing from other schools but I’m pretty faithful to

Class 4A Championship Playoff Preview and Prediction

Who will be hoisting the Class 4A championship trophy? Maryland Varsity
breaks down the game, the teams, the players to watch, and predicts who we feel
will win the title. Subscribe today and never miss a thing!

#1
Suitland vs. #2 Northwest

On Suitland: They may have given up their highest point total of the year in the
semifinals (25) but Suitland is alive and looking to slow down another potent
offense. Anthony Jackson and a stacked unit defensively have been crucial
to their winning ways but Robert Wigfall and the offense is quite capable of
putting up numbers as well. The Rams have gotten over the 40 point mark
five times this fall.
Suitland MVP: Robert Wigfall

On
Northwest: Since their October 25th loss against Gaithersburg has played
inspired football while beating some of the best teams in Class 4A.
Quarterback Mark Pierce may just be a sophomore but his poise and ability to
make plays has allowed him to stand out among his peers. The defense did enough
in slowing down a potent attack in the semifinals to allow the Jaguars to make a
shocking run to the championship.
Northwest MVP: Mark Pierce

Prediction: Suitland 38, Northwest 31
Why: The defensive players are
Suitland have been more productive overall and it shows here.

Conference in Prediction: Medium

will win the title. Subscribe today and never miss a thing!

#1
Linganore vs. #1 Franklin

On Linganore: A dominating second half that
included scoring 22-points in the fourth quarter helped Linganore make a
shocking run past River Hill into the championship game. That momentum is
something the Lancers are looking to continue. Clark Stieren, Josh
Gontarek, and Phillip Butler have all been a huge part of their success.
This trio will be asked to continue leading the charge with a title hanging in
the balance.
Linganore MVP: Josh Gontarek

On Franklin: An
extremely young group at Franklin may have been concerned early on with their
2-2 start but those struggles have only fueled the fire during their nine game
win streak. The Indians have been dominating in the postseason with
Jacquez Adams, Steven Smothers, Jordan Adams, and a strong offensive line
posting jaw dropping offensive numbers. Their defense has only given up
more than 20 points once in 2013.
Franklin MVP: Jacquez Adams

Prediction: Franklin 30, Linganore 21
Why: The firepower that Franklin has
shown during the entire playoffs is what they feel can help them dominate even
with the title on the line.
Conference in Prediction: Medium

#1
Patuxent vs. #1 Middletown

On Patuxent: After a number of narrow wins
down the stretch, Patuxent was able to handily pull away from Patterson in the
semifinals and hope that momentum remains heading into this showdown.
Tyler Crounse and Rafiq Douglas have carried the club offensively as they have
combined for over 3,000 yards on the ground. These two must find a way to
move the ball against one of the best defenses all of Maryland.

Patuxent MVP: Tyler Crounse

On Middletown: Considering the Middletown
defense has not given up over 14 points in a single game this year; it goes to
show you just how talented this group really is. Rick Leonard, Nick Welch,
and a host of others have been key to their winning ways. The offense is
more than capable of putting points on the board with Brad Rinehart having
rushed for over 1,000 yards behind a talented line.
Middletown MVP:
Nick Welch

Prediction: Middletown 28, Patuxent 22
Why: The
Middletown defense has been at another level all of 2013.

Conference in Prediction: Low

#1 Fort
Hill vs. #1 Douglass

On Fort Hill: The dream season at Fort Hill has
continued and all they need to achieve the final goal is just one more victory.
The Sentinels have cruised during much of the playoffs but likely have a game on
their hands here. DeKarai Darr, Ty Johnson, and a powerful offensive line
have been vital to their success moving the chains. This team has a knack
for lighting up the scoreboard in a hurry and must find a way to do that here.

Fort Hill MVP: Ty Johnson

On Douglass: Six shutouts and some stellar
play on the defensive side of the football are why Douglass is undefeated and
playing for the championship. Donyae Moody has dominated on D and his play
has been crucial to his team getting so many big stops. The offense has
remained extremely balanced with Camron West, Da'Quan Alexander, and Michael
Owens all capable of moving the chains. The Mighty Ducks have come to play
during much of the season.
Douglass MVP: Donyae Moody

Prediction: Douglass 21, Fort Hill 20
Why: The balance of Douglass
offensively to move the football.

Prediction: Low

Class 3A Semifinal Playoff Preview and Predictions - 11/26

What two Class 3A teams does Maryland Varsity feel will be eventually playing
in the championship? We answer that question now while talking about
the semifinal games, who wins, a game changer, and the potential of an upset as well.
Subscribe today and never miss a thing!

#1 Linganore vs. #3 River Hill

Prediction: Linganore 35, River Hill 21
Why: The dominance on both sides of
the football has been crucial for Linganore this season. The Lancers have
used that momentum during much of the playoffs and it shows here in a tough game
with River Hill.
Confidence in Prediction: Medium
Game Changer:
Clark Stieren, Linganore

Another Factor to Watch For: What the potent River Hill defense is able to
against a talented club in Linganore.

#1 Huntingtown vs. #1
Franklin
Prediction: Franklin 20, Huntingtown 18
Why: An extremely
athletic group at Franklin may be loaded with younger athletes but they know
that they have nothing to lose. This club has dominated during the first
two rounds of the postseason and that continues here.

Confidence in Prediction: Low
Game Changer: Steven Smothers, Franklin

Another Factor to Watch For: What Austin Kline, Matt Schug, and Bryan McCourt
can do against the playmakers at Franklin.

in the championship? We answer that question now while talking about
the semifinal games, who wins, a game changer, and the potential of an upset as well.

#1 Suitland vs. #2 Meade

Prediction: Suitland 27, Meade 24
Why: While both narrowly got out of the
quarterfinal round, Suitland finished strong down the stretch and it showed with
their undefeated record. The Rams have also used balance offensively and
that variety makes it tough for those trying to slow them down.

Confidence in Prediction: Medium
Game Changer: Robert Wigfall, Suitland

Another Factor to Watch For: Which team has the ability to make plays late when
the game is still on the line.

#1 Paint Branch vs. #2
Northwest
Prediction: Paint Branch 28, Northwest 22
Why: The thoughts of
revenge have not left their mind and Paint Branch is ready to prove what they
can do with another chance. Avenging this defeat would propel the Panthers
and their high flying offensive attack in the Class 4A title game.

Confidence in Prediction: Low
Game Changer: Gaston Cooper, Paint Branch

Another Factor to Watch For: The rematch factor in which Northwest was able to
topple Paint Branch, 31-28.

#1 Patuxent vs. #4 Patterson

Prediction: Patterson 22, Patuxent 20
Why: Pulling off this upset will be
difficult but Patterson has been on fire during the playoffs. This club is
battled tested and it has shown. The Clippers have not been scored on
since late last month.

Confidence in Prediction: Very Low
Game Changer: The entire Patterson
defense

Another Factor to Watch For: How the Patuxent is able to perform against a
talented group at Patterson.

#1 Middletown vs. #2 Kent Island

Prediction: Middletown 31, Kent Island 20
Why: The consistency week to week
and overall dominance of Middletown. The Knights appear to be on a mission
and they have shown it by going undefeated at this point of the year.

Class 1A Semifinal Playoff Preview and Predictions - 11/25

What two Class 1A teams does Maryland Varsity feel will be eventually playing
in the championship? We answer that question now while talking about
the semifinal games, who wins, a game changer, and the potential of an upset as well.

#1 Fort Hill vs. #1 Surrattsville

Prediction: Fort Hill 35, Surrattsville 21
Why: The overall dominance of Fort
Hill has been on full display all year long. The Sentinels have been
excellent in the playoffs both offensively and defensively. This club
realizes how close they are to perfection and will do everything they can to get
to the title game in this showdown.

Confidence in Prediction: High
Game Changer: Dekarai Darr, Fort Hill

Another Factor to Watch For: Only one team this fall has kept it within single
digits of Fort Hill. Will that lack of close games end up helping or
hurting Surrattsville in the end?

#1 Douglass vs. #1 Cambridge-South Dorchester
Prediction: Douglass 27,
Cambridge-South Dorchester 24
Why: Making the crucial play on either side of
the football has been crucial for Douglass during a undefeated run in 2013.
That timely ability is what has them two wins away from a championship.
Their undefeated run is impressive the Mighty Ducks still feel that they will
get the state's attention with another victory.

Confidence in Prediction: Medium
Game Changer: Donyae Moody, Douglass

Another Factor to Watch For: If the Douglas defense can continue dominating
opponents as they have done for much of the fall.
