The varsity football game this Friday at 7:00 pm between Fort Hill and Southern Garrett in Oakland has been cancelled. Southern only has 12 players available.

The JV game for Monday between Fort Hill and Southern at Greenway Ave Stadium is still on.

I feel bad for Southern. They only have 2 seniors healthy and I suspect they will have to cancel many if not all their varsity games moving forward.

I am so excited to see FH travel to my area to play Briar Woods on the 29th. This feels unprecedented to me!

Is there any way to check out ticket availability in advance? I’d love to attend this game in person. It’ll be quite the treat for me and my Mrs as we are both Sentinel alums.

That is one of the sloppiest games I have seen played in years. Hopefully put this in the past and come out strong next week.

On facebook a guy started a page called Cumberland Forward looks like he is going try to put local highschool football information on there. There is a thing called Blue Beat a talk show. They talk a little bit about players from the Warriors and Allegany

It is hard to tell after just one week, but it did allow us the opportunity to see our local teams against competition for the first time with it counting, and that did provide us a the chance to clear up the picture of area football 2023 a little bit.

My observations from week one…

Allegany - Narrowed the gap between them and Mountain Ridge. Clearly the 3rd best team in the area for now. And will have a chance to battle #1 and #2.

Mountain Ridge - The gap between them and Fort Hill has widened. Maybe significantly. We shall see. They are still a very formidable team.

Fort Hill - Still the team to beat in the area. Widened the gap more in the offseason.

Keyser - Seems to be about the same or a little worse. Hard to tell because I’m not quite sure how good Hedgesville is.

Frankfort - Should have competitive games with Northern, Mountain Ridge and Keyser. Could be in the running for 2nd best team, but more than likely #4.

Northern - This team will always be competitive. Should battle for #4 or #5.

Southern - Tough road to climb.

What were everyone else’s thoughts on the first week with all area schools in action.

When was the last time Allegany beat FH, do they have a chance this year? Allegany has the best and deepest in skill positions then they have been in a long time. This week at Oakdale I think they will get blown out by the 35 point rule. Allegany offense line needs work. They have some speed. Pattison can pound up the middle, good receivers. Hopefully they make Zac Michaels more part of the offense. He had a decent game on defense for missing all of last year.

Deshaun Brown he is a natural on the football field with a lot of skill and physical ability.

Mountain Ridge defense holds on Southern's first series.

Will Patterson has two long touchdown runs. One brought back by penalty. 7-0 MR 9:41 1st Q

Mountain Ridge with a nice second drive. Short touchdown run. 14-0 Ridge with 5:37 to go in 1st Q.

What looked like a blocked punt and recovery in the end zone makes it 21-0 Mountain Ridge. 4:06 to go in 1st Quarter.

Southern converted two four downs on their next drive. Including one deep in their own territory. But a holding penalty set them behind the chains and the drive stalled. Then, another holding penalty on their punt forced them to re-kick and the snap on that one was way too high and the SHS punter had to fall on it inside his own 5.

Mountain Ridge scored on the next play. 28-0 MR with just over nine minute to play in the half.

As I was typing the last update, MR picked up a shanked SHS punt and returned it for a touchdown, 35-0 MR with 7:32 to go in half.

After a three-and-out by Southern, and a very short punt, Mountain Ridge had its second one play scoring drive of the first half. This time, a short touchdown pass, and it is now 42-0 MR with 5:14 to go in the first half.

Mountain Ridge has another good drive and converts two pass plays in the middle of the field. 49-0 MR. It is now halftime.
