Annapolis Observations

What a game!
Most exciting title game I've seen since Dunbar vs. Fort Hill 2008. Even more considering this had local county bragging rights.

Most thought this game would go to the wire assuming penalties and turnovers were even, and they were. Although I have heard/read some rumblings that officials called too much late in the game instead of letting the players decide it as they had most of the entire game.

The penalties were relatively even.
Fort Hill - 6 penalties for 53 yards
Mtn Ridge - 5 penalties for 31 yards

There were some late game holding calls on the Mtn Ridge defense that extended a few drives. There were some late game calls on the Fort Hill offense that ended drives.

My last two cents on the referee call debates: It is odd that the last two games FH has played using out of town officials that the 10 and 15 yard judgement call variety flags were cut below half. What this says is that local officials are looking for penalties. Out of town officials are looking to let the kids play. They are different philosophies and we see this even moreso on the basketball court. I have heard coaches say up here in the west refs call the game tight on the hardwood. Down state not so much. Personally, please give me the officials who let the kids decide games. The less penalties called the better.

In other rules debates...yes teams that chose to kick field goals and PATs are at a disadvantage in the state title game with the 5 foot shorter field goal posts. The MPSSAA won't fix the issue due to availablity of fields. I do like playing at the Naval Academy and at the Ravens Stadium and even College Park a long time ago. I'm not sure how hard it is to replace a FG post at these places but I would find out if it's possible.

Two things I collected after the game that players seemed to confirm on the FH side is that the first FG attempt by FH that sailed wide would have been good on a high school field goal post width. Second, they felt the 2 point conversion play in the first half that was ruled no good was incorrect. Players on top the pile said #2 for FH clearly extended and got the ball over the goal line, which would have made the game 15-14 FH. I will have to watch the replay.

DEFENSE
The FH second half defense won this game. Can't put it any more blunt. 23 yards and 1 first down allowed. The entire second half was played deep on the Mtn Ridge side of the field. Just to repeat from previous posts, the Mtn Ridge red zone defense has also been amazing. I don't know how many times FH got the ball inside the 30 and could not muster anything more than a 2 yard gain. Great defensive efforts by both teams after settling in with a 14-13 game.

WHAT A LOSS CAN MEAN - CREDIT THE FH COACHING STAFF
I remember after the last time these two met back in early October in Frostburg wondering how a losing team that rarely ever loses handles a loss. Sometimes it can be powerful. Using hindsight one has to believe/know that loss was worth more than can be described. FH learned and adjusted. Teams sometimes learn more in a loss than a win depending on the coaching staff. Many of the true FH fans and ex-players were critical of many things, including myself. We're just not used to losing 30-8 if at all and spoiled as hell. It's at this time all those people, including myself, stand up and acknowledge the job this coaching staff did with X's and O's adjustments that made this team better. Little things only a true understanding of football can comprehend. Now that the season is over and I can divulge things I should not at times...

- FH changed their cadence. It wasn't easy. Mtn Ridge was massively jumping the count in the first meeting.
- FH started to huddle. Mtn Ridge was out guessing FH tendencies when the FH offense lined up in formation and called the play with wrist bands.
- FH eventually made a move at fullback
- blocking basics changed because too many defenders were going unblocked
- FH at times stopped pulling the backside guard due to penetration
- we saw more I-formation and motion sets that opened up new play calling

There are other things. Don't get me wrong, I felt there was a great deal of extremely conservative offensive play calls in the second half by FH with their best player lined up at receiver as a decoy. But most of the problems were a case of a very, very good Mtn Ridge defense. In short, if you were questioning this staff after the loss, thank them now. Fantastic job!

If I could change anything moving forward, always being the armchair QB, it's adding a passing game coordinator. Someone with experience playing receiver, someone with experience that understands tree routes and running crisp routes and how to help your QB s scrambling. Doesn't mean they have to get away from the wing-T pound the ball philosophy but developing some type of passing game has always been a huge weakness.

OTHER STATE TITLE GAMES
Could not help but see some Oakdale fans in Annapolis, who played right after this FH vs. Mtn Ridge game, secretly pulling for FH to justify their own confidence levels. Oakdale lost 14-21 to Damascus. Can't help but wonder if FH or Mtn Ridge could have won that classification state title as well. To repeat my thoughts...FH, Mtn Ridge and Dunbar could win any of these classification titles except Class 4A. COVID weakened football at many schools. Allegany County however, did a much better job of handling it. Dedication!

MOVING FORWARD
After 100 congratulatory conversations last night it's always been my take during this title run that began in 2013 is that FH always loses a ton of starters every single year. The preseason chatter has always been "but FH lost most of their starters". Well, yeah. They live and die with veterans. It's the senior laden teams that win championships. We see this at the Final Four hoops level. Young kids can be great, one and done types. But it's the team of seniors always making the postseason run.

The biggest FH needs for next year will be at defensive back and who plays QB. The later is always an open question because it's usually a senior behind center. There is a great deal of unused offensive skill talent waiting in the wings again and many of this years stars were sophomores and juniors, especially on the line.

See y'all in 8 months. Now comes the usual offseason task of filling a schedule.

Iron House

What happened to all the talk from the certified Tom Landry level geniuses about the lack of weightlifting and coaching prowess at FH?

For weeks we were foretold of the demise of the FH program because it stopped lifting, couldn't block and the coaches couldn't control the players.

Now all of a sudden it's quieter than a mouse pissing on cotton when it comes to any of that. 🤔

The 3 or 4 of you left who actually know what you're talking about, and aren't just fan boys, know you thought the same thing too 😂

Are these guys going to tell us that the players did that much lifting in just a few weeks to catch up?

BTW, even odds that the first reply to this will be some whiney post that doesn't address the question from one of the think-tank that claimed it in the first place.

Offensive Concerns

I re-watched the game on NFHS just to verify that Mountain Ridge lined up 5,6 and 7 men on the line of scrimmage. I am not a coach but I thought that it was play calling 101 to throw some swing passes and bubble screens to loosen up the defense so you could run the football. I think that there were only two swing passes thrown the entire game and both of those were very successful. Someone on here please explain to me why that was not used or why it would not work?

don’t get me wrong I’m extremely grateful for the win. I just think it should have been an easy victory instead of a nailbiter!

I was looking around for Barry latimore on the sideline🤣😂

Q&A with Archbishop Spalding athlete Tyler Brown

How has everything been going football wise as of late?
“Everything has been going really fast. We’re currently 10-1, so 11 games into the season and it seems like the season just started. We’re coming to the end of our season with the championship being next Friday against Calvert Hall.”

Going forward, what do you feel your team can continue to improve on?
“The two main things that we have to continue improving on is tackling and blocking. I feel that if we do those two things better than Calvert Hall next Friday, we’ll walk away MIAA A Champions.”

Have you been pleased with your performances?
“I’m never pleased with my performances. Our coaching staff holds our team to a high standard so each week I’m working to do better than I did the previous week. Our entire team has that mindset, which is why I feel that we’ve made it this far.”

How do you feel about the play of your team?
“We’re a really tough team when we’re all playing together and all on the same page. When we come to play as a team, we’re really hard to beat. Our coaching staff puts us in a position each week to be successful, so as players, we have to come out and execute the game plan to the best of our ability.”

What are your sporting goals going forward as of now?
“Each week my goal is to win the game of that week. I never look past teams. Last week my goal was to beat McDonogh, and this upcoming week is to beat Calvert Hall in the Championship and become MIAA A Champs.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Most definitely. I want to continue playing football at the next level. That has been a goal of mine since I started playing football.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I've been in contact with some schools. Maryland, Northwestern, Syracuse are schools that I’ve communicated with.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“As of right now, it’s just been small communication with the schools that I’ve communicated with.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“Yes. I’ve been up to Maryland to see the campus and a game.”

Do you have plans for game day trips?
“Yes. I plan to make some trips to see some games but I’m focused on our Championship game as of now.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“Oregon was my favorite college team growing up. I loved watching those guys play, and of course the jerseys.”

Q&A with John Carroll quarterback Ben Shutt

How has everything with the football season been going so far?
“The season has gone pretty well, much better than expected. Following an 0-10 season last year with little expectations, we have put ourselves back into playoff contention.”

Have you been pleased with how you have played this season?
“I am pretty content with how I've played this year. I've rotated throughout different linebacker positions, which is new to me this year. Despite being my first year as an LB, I feel I've settled into the position pretty well.”

How do you feel your team has played?
“I feel like our team has played much more as a TEAM than last year, when [there] was a lot of individualism. That is one of the main reasons why we've had a lot more success.”

What do you feel your team can improve on?
“Having a new coaching staff will always result in hiccups at the start. Things have smoothed out as games have gone on and players are really starting to believe in the offensive and defensive schemes. If we start scoring more points as well, I think we will be better off in future games.”

What are the keys for your team being successful going forward?
“Some keys for us to be successful in the playoffs as well as next year are to keep trusting the coaches and doing our individual jobs. People doing their own things often results in mishaps.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“I'm not sure whether I'd like to play baseball or football in college.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I've received camp invites and messages from a few D2 and D3 football schools in which I look forward to following up on. I would love the opportunity to play at the next level.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“I don't have a particular school recruiting me the hardest.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I have not made any college trips, but plan to in the near future.”

Do you have plans for game day trips?
“I do not have currently active plans for game day trips. I am absolutely open to invites and recruiting.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“My favorite colleges growing up are Pitt and Maryland.”

Going forward, what do you feel your team can continue to improve on?
“I feel like my team needs to improve on really just communicating and listening. I feel like that [was] one of the cons of our heartbreaking season.”

Have you been pleased with your performances?

Fort Hill vs. Mountain Ridge - For All The 2022 Marbles

My Five Keys to the game for both teams:

Fort Hill Five Keys
1. Fewer penalties and turnovers
2. Need much better interior offensive line play
3. Run between the tackles - establish a fullback
4. No fear at throwing the short pass
5. Backs have to block

Mountain Ridge Five Keys
1. Defense eliminate big running plays
2. Own the line of scrimmage
3. Keep offensive balance (run/pass)
4. Stand out red zone defense
5. Get Uma free

All of the keys for FH are offensive. The defense has been the calling card all year, even in the first game at Frostburg. In the first meeting however, the Miners defense dominated the line of scrimmage with extreme penetration in the middle that kept FH from being able to pull their guards and do their wing-T thing. Against Old Mill, Mountain Ridge and Allegany at Homecoming, Fort Hill could not run between the tackles. With a newly established fullback and a reset blocking philosophy they have been much more successful since the playoffs started. But that was against very inferior defenses. And Mountain Ridge is going to crowd the box again with no safety - daring FH to beat them throwing.

The numbers were well documented in the first meeting...11 penalties and 3 turnovers for Fort Hill. That won't work plain and simple.

While FH was able to rack up offensive yards throwing the ball the last time they failed to address the 20-yard cushion Miner defensive backs were giving receivers. All year FH has operated using a deep passing route tree, little to no use for a short passing game. It killed FH in the Miner Stadium red zone when the run was stuffed. If they can't throw quick hits and quick slants their offensive production will remain inconsistent. This is really asking Fort Hill to do something they have not done all season. Don't count on it unless the Miners jump out to a significant lead.

Also in the last meeting, if the FH running back did not get the ball they checked out and just watched the play while their man was making a tackle. It's imperative they support each other and block as if their lives depended on it...many times the difference between an 8-yard gain and a TD run. No big running plays last time for FH. Need those extra blocks.

Mountain Ridge won the line of scrimmage last time, period. Created some holes to spring open running backs, gave the QB time and defensively took away everything between the tackles while also stuffing the big play. If they can continue to do this they win by two scores or more.

The Miner offense wasn't exactly lights out the last time, but was able to take advantage of two key fumbles for touchdowns with key plays and some passing success. They were efficient, they had success running and throwing and moving the chains. Their red zone offense was miles ahead of FH. Getting Uma's legs more involved in the offense would be a big addition this time around. He's the star, be the star.

If FH can't score, FH can't win. The Miner red zone defense last time was so impressive. There was no chance FH was going to run the ball into the end zone. That's the same formula to use.

Aside from winning the line of scrimmage and mistake statistics, Mountain Ridge had two huge advantages last time around.
1. Mental Approach
2. Coaching Preparedness and Game Plan

The Miners wanted the game more. It was their Super Bowl. They played like a team that had lost 17 times in a row fighting, punching and kicking every snap. FH thought they were 21 points better before the opening kickoff. The red team cannot enter the Naval Academy with this mindset again. Second, Mountain Ridge had a game plan the last time. A scheme, a better scouted approach, a better way of being prepared. FH thought they could just show up and do what they do. That game plan won't work. FH is now the underdog who has to punch and kick every Super Bowl snap. FH is now the team that needs a few wrinkles and adjustments just for this one game. At the same time, anticipate the Miners having their own wrinkles and twists again.

CalPreps has Mountain Ridge favored by one point. Based on what I saw in person the last time I would make the Miners a 14 point favorite on this neutral field. Not sure the FH offensive line has what it takes to put points on the board by running the football against this stacked box - which is what FH has made their livelihood on against inferior opponents. Since the last time they met the Sentinels have almost completely abandoned the passing game. In all four playoff games Fort Hill has thrown the ball a mere 5 times. That equals 1.25 passes per game. They will live and die trying to run the ball. If they cannot, it will be a long drive home. The Miners have enough offensive balance and such a stand out ability to force FH from being able to hand the ball off and run across the goal line you have to like the Miners chances given their multi-dimensional approach. But the FH defense is more than stout enough to turn that table. This defense has only given up 6 points in the postseason. They will need one last stellar defensive performance to pull in another state title.

If the turnovers and penalties are even this one could turn out to be epic. If games are won and lost up front, Mountain Ridge is better - at least from the October film I am watching.

2022 broadcast/stream season complete

Our 2022 High School Football broadcast / stream season has been challenging for us in some very unexpected and unnecessary ways which were out of our control. We worked through these things and hopefully, provided a quality product for fans to enjoy.
This was our 32nd year broadcasting the games. Thank you to everyone who sponsored and supported the broadcasts and streams this season. We really appreciate it. All of this season’s games are still available to view at https://commercialvideoservices.com/webcasts.htm And also on Boxcast.

Congratulations to Mountain Ridge and Fort Hill for playing hard and making it to the State Championship game. We have been asked if we will be televising and streaming the championship game. Many years ago, we were allowed to broadcast the championship game from Byrd Stadium, and in later years, Raven’s Stadium. In recent years, the MPSSAA has not allowed us to broadcast or stream the championship game. We won’t be there.
Thanks again,
Greg Honeycutt

Ideal football schedule

In a world where the scheduling issues of today didn't exist what would be the ideal realistic schedule for the school you support be?

For FH I'd go with:
Allegany
Keyser
Mtn Ridge
Northern
Southern
Sherando
Martinsburg/Musselman
Morgantown/Bridgeport
Linganore/Middletown/TJ

All regional games, different looks to prepare for you could obviously switch a lot of these out for other but just something I thought about given recent discussions.

Best receiver in college football

For those into the college football depths.

I am a registered Heisman voter and also a registered Biletnikoff Award voter, which goes out to the nation's best college football receiver. The Heisman is easy...just pick the three best players in order. The Biletnikoff is far more extensive as they require each voter to submit their Top 10 receivers in order -- and that is just to narrow down the semifinalist list. As a voter, it's impossible to watch every game and every candidate weekly. So you pour through an excruciating amount of statistics, highlights, previous year's data, etc. to try and put this thing into a perspective and then order them. These awards are never going to look like a NFL Draft Analysis, that's not the same as being the best in college football.

Jordan Addison won this award last year when he played for Pitt. You can make a case for him winning it again after transferring and starring this season for USC. But he didn't post the same type of numbers as the ones ahead of him.

Here are the nation's top rated receivers in college football according to my Biletnikoff Ballot:
1. Jaylin Hyatt - Tennessee
2. Marvin Harrison - Ohio State
3. Josh Downs - North Carolina
4. Nathaniel Dell - Houston
5. Charlie Jones - Purdue
6. Rashee Rice - SMU
7. Jordan Addison - Southern California
8. Zay Flowers - Boston College
9. Xavier Hutchinson - Iowa State
10. Keylon Stokes - Tulsa

But if you ask me who are the first three receivers taken in the 2023 NFL Draft I would say:

Quentin Johnston - TCU
Jordan Addison - Southern California
Jaxson Smith-Njigba - Ohio State (been hampered with injury in 2022)

BUCKEYE NUTS
Ohio State has three receivers that are worthy of being drafted in the first round next year: JSN, Harrison and Egbuka. That's nuts.
