Football Quote Board - 9/18

The Quote Board is a feature from Maryland Varsity where we quote some of the
top athletes throughout the state on their opponent this week on the football
field. Quotes included are from DeMatha vs. Eastern Christian, Meade vs. Old
Mill, Oakdale vs. Winters Mill, Caravel vs. Archbishop Curley, and Chopticon vs.
Northern.

Old Mill linebacker Malik Hicks
Opponent - Meade

Areas of improvement
“We need to keep our heads up. We played two of the best
teams in the county and we didn’t lose by much. We have to keep fighting and
we’ll do good. We are looking to bounce back. We have been hungry in practice.
We are trying to stay humble and be ready for the next one.”

On Meade

“They have a new offense that is a spread. We basically got to keep everyone
healthy for that game.”

The Lee players
“I know that they run the
spread and that they are a fast team. They no huddle and run quickly. The key to
beating Lee is stopping their run game. If we do that, we have a good
possibility of beating Lee.”

Keys to a victory
“We got to stay
together as a team. We got to be focused. We have to be ready during practice
and focus every week until December. Our seniors got to be leaders and everyone
has to be focused.”

...........................................................................................................

Oakdale linebacker Drew Yarborough
Opponent -
Winters Mill

Areas of improvement
“Overall our defense is good
but on offense we have to focus on trying to get the ball down field and score
touchdowns. We haven't really connected yet so I think that is one of the main
goals for us.”

On Winters Mill
“They are 0-2 but I think it’ll be a
good game.”

Their players
“I don’t really know anything about them. We
will watch film and work hard. Middletown beat them 54-6. Obviously they are not
doing that good but we can’t sleep on them.”

Keys to a win
“We have to
be able to stop the run. We can improve on both sides of the ball. We have to
keep doing what we are doing right now.”

...........................................................................................................

Archbishop Curley athlete Deonte Harris
Opponent -
Caravel

Areas of improvement
“I just think we can keep
coming together as a team overall.”

On Caravel
“We beat them last year
but we still can’t take them too lightly.”

The Caravel players
“No, no
really. I now about their running back.”

Keys to a victory
“It is just
consistency. We just got to be consistent on both sides of the ball.”

Goals for this year
“A championship.”

...........................................................................................................

Chopticon wide receiver Nick Gray
Opponent -
Northern

Team improvement
“You always want more touchdowns and
less negative plays. Each week we are getting closer to our goals. We want to
keep getting better and winning ball games.”

On Northern
“Northern is
an 0-2 team right now but in watching film they are a solid team. They got some
size and some talent. They are a team if we take them too lightly they could
sneak up easily.”

Keys to a victory
“Each and every week we have to
keep getting better. I believe we will as the season goes on. We have some big
games coming up so we have to get ready for crunch time.”

...........................................................................................................

DeMatha quarterback Beau English
Opponent - Eastern
Christian

Areas of improvement
“We have to improve on our
execution. A lot of times we have good plays called but we have to execute on
them. We also have to have some leaders step up.”

On Eastern Christian

“I know that they are a really talented team. I know they have been in Texas the
past few weeks and held their own. It should be a good game.”

Keys to a
victory
“It comes down to like I said executing our plays. We have to do a
better job for that. We have the playmakers to win the game but we have to give
them the ball and let them make plays.”

Class 3A Breakdown - September 17th

What stood out over the weekend on the Class 3A football field? Maryland Varsity breaks down the results and what stood out.
From some surprising upsets and key victories, subscribe today and never miss a
thing!

What stood out to us over the weekend

South
Hagerstown 33, Thomas Johnson 28
In the game of the week, it took a great
effort from South Hagerstown to pull away against a strong Thomas Johnson team.
This game was expected to be dramatic and it lived up to it throughout.

Linganore 26, Westminster 7
Another stellar performance defensively. This
club can get stops early and often.

Damascus 56, Northwood 6
Give
this group credit for focusing. They took care of business and now are looking
ahead to Quince Orchard and Watkins Mill.

Huntington 24, McDonough 0

Is anyone going to score on them? Two games and two shutouts in.

Milford
Mill 46, Hereford 20
Scoring 103 points in their first two games will make
headlines and it shows here.

Glenelg 26, Wildlake 16
The game was
closer than expected but Glenelg was thrilled to bounce back with a win. The
Gladiators need skill players ready to step forward in a hurry.

What stood out over the weekend on the Class 1A football field? Maryland Varsity breaks down the results and what stood out.
From some surprising upsets and key victories, subscribe today and never miss a
thing!

What stood out to us over the weekend

Fort Hill 28, Keyser 20
Being tested early in the season can pay dividends
late and that is something Fort Hill hopes will happen. Keyser gave them all
they could handle and yet this program still continued their winning ways.

Surrattsville 28, Largo 8
Beating a quality Largo team at home says a lot
about just how high the ceiling may be for Surrattsville this fall.

Perryville 44, North East 15
The offensive fireworks continue at Perryville.
They are averaging more than over 46 points a night.

Cambridge-South
Dorchester 23, Kent County 14
With an offense struggling at times, the
Cambridge-South Dorchester defense was asked to do a lot. They came to play in
allowing just touchdown against Kent County.

Douglass 48, Northwestern 6

Flexing their muscles in an impressive top ten matchup just shows once again how
talented Douglass really is.

From some surprising upsets and key victories, subscribe today and never miss a
thing!

What stood out to us over the weekend

Douglass 44, Ballou 0
Two games in the books and the combined scores are 82-0
in favor of Douglass. Good enough to move them to #1 in the poll.

Queen
Anne's County 56, Decatur 41
The defense may have decided to not show up on
both sides of the football but the offense was ready. Both teams put up some
huge numbers before Queen Anne's County pulled away late.

Oakdale 35,
South Carroll 7
The more comfortable this team gets with playing with each
other, the more dangerous they can become.

Riverdale Baptist 34, Gwynn
Park 26
Their record may not pretty but Gwynn Park will benefit from a tough
schedule early on.

Easton 41, Colonel Richardson 0
Another dominating
win is enough to push Easton within the Maryland Varsity top ten.

Fallston 30, Edgewood 29
Dramatic battle that could have went either way.
Fallston made the biggest plays when they needed them the most.

From some surprising upsets and key victories, subscribe today and never miss a
thing!

What stood out to us over the weekend

McDonogh
28, Elder (Ohio) 14
Bouncing back from their first loss of the year was
important for this McDonogh team. The pieces are there to do special
things in 2014.

La Salle College (PA) 41, DeMatha 39
0-2
against out of state competition is not what DeMatha had hoped for but this
young group has set the bar high as they focus more on local opponents going
forward.

Gilman 49, Anacostia 0
Earning their first victory of the
season in blowout fashion is a big confidence boast for Gilman on the gridiron.

Good Counsel 23, Calvert Hall 0
Some expected this group to be down
this season but the Good Counsel defense has been on fire early in 2014.
They have given up 19 points in three games.

Mount St. Joseph 24,
Boys Latin 19
Closer than expected but Mount St. Joseph will take it in order
to remain undefeated this fall.

Bullis School 29, Archbishop
Spalding 28
Game of the week? Two strong programs faced off with Bullis
School narrowly coming out on top with their elite athletes leading the charge.

Football Quote Board - 9/12

The Quote Board is a feature from Maryland Varsity where we quote some of the
top athletes throughout the state on their opponent this week on the football
field. Quotes included are from Calvert Hall vs. Good Counsel, Howard vs.
Reservoir, La Plata vs. Calvert, Suitland vs. Roosevelt, and Lackey vs.
Westlake.

Calvert Hall running back Damien Farmer
Opponent -
Good Counsel

On Good Counsel: “They are pretty good and they are
always pretty good. I think if we play our best football we can compete with
anyone.”

The Good Counsel players: “I played rec football with some of
their guys and I think their quarterback started last season. They got some good
players. It’ll be a good game.”

Keys to a victory: “We have to get the
running game going because we have a good quarterback. We really have to get the
offense going. If we do that, the defense will feed off of the momentum.”

The football season: “We are 2-0 so it is really good and the team is
playing really good. We still got things to improve and we can still get
better.”

...........................................................................................................

Howard athlete Isaiah Stokes
Opponent - Reservoir

On Reservoir: “I believe it is going to be a very good game for us. It’ll be
tough because they have two quarterbacks that’ll give us a hard time. One is
more athletic than the other but they’ll throw a lot. That’ll be a test for our
defensive backs.”

Keys to a win: “The key to that game I’d say is our
defensive line getting to the quarterback. We have to make them fire passes so
our defensive backs can break on the ball and make a few plays.”

The
football season: “So far we have been doing pretty good. Our offense is finally
getting rolling. We played a tough game and came out scoring. The whole team
fought all the way through.”

Areas of improvement: “The whole team can
improve and I’d say we have to continue getting better. Defensively, we have to
make tackles and play our keys.”

...........................................................................................................

La Plata wide receiver Jack Pilkerton
Opponent -
Calvert

On Calvert: “I watched their film from Friday and I think
we can do some serious damage to them. Their defense has a lot of holes that we
can pick at. I think overall we’ll have a really good game on both sides of the
ball.”

Week One: “I think it went pretty great. We played Lackey and they
are one of if not the best team in the conference and we held our own against
them. I feel really good about the outcome even though we didn’t pull off the
W.”

What the team can improve on: “On offense, we need to work on
blocking and make sure we are executing our plays. Defensively we did a really
good job containing their backfield. Our defense was very impressive. Our
offense needs to execute on plays and we’ll be good from there.”

...........................................................................................................

Suitland athlete Tevin Singleton
Opponent -
Roosevelt

On Roosevelt: “They are pretty good. They are a tough
team.”

The Roosevelt players: “No sir. I just know that they are a good
team.”

Keys to a win: “It is to stay disciplined and execute on every
play. We have to do our jobs.”

The football season: “It is going good. We
haven't been at our best but we are working hard.”

Areas of improvement:
“It is to get better in practice. We have to improve at every position.”

Goals for the season: “It is just to get better every day. We are trying to get
into the playoffs.”

...........................................................................................................

Westlake defensive end Malachi Washington
Opponent -
Lackey

On Lackey: “I feel they are good team. I feel if we come out
like we did last week we’ll lose again. We have to come out and punch them in
the mouth as soon as the game starts.”

The Lackey players: “I know they
got a few players that are really good. I feel like that doesn’t mean nothing if
we don’t play as a team. We can’t let down.”

Keys to a victory: “If our
offense comes out and plays good, our defense will play even better. If our
offense plays well, we win. It it doesn’t, we’ll probably lose.”

Week
one: “It didn’t go really well. We lost and I feel we beat ourselves. We got to
work harder in practice. I think some of the players on our team feel like we
needed the loss and it will help make us a better team.”

Areas of
improvement: “I would say the offensive line is what I think. I think our
offense line needs to get better and if they do we can go very far.”

Class 2A Breakdown

From some surprising upsets and key victories, subscribe today and never miss a

What stood out to us over the weekend

Westminster 21, Middletown 19
Seeing a dominating program in Middletown go
down in the opener was a surprise but this team was hit extremely hard by
graduation. They must be ready to bounce back in a hurry but will need a
lot of younger athletes to grow up in a hurry.

Eleanor Roosevelt 28,
Gwynn Park 22
Gwynn Park may have slightly slid in the rankings but they gave
Roosevelt all that they could handle in this narrow loss. Expect them to
learn from it and bounce back in a hurry.

Friendship Collegiate
45, Dunbar 8
The score certainly was lopsided but it was an opportunity for
Dunbar to play against an elite opponent. If they can stay healthy, this
team will only get better.

St. Paul's 33, Hereford 19
What does
previously rated Hereford need to do in order to turn things around? This
club has to come back together and prove what they can do as a team playing as
one.

Potomac 28, Suitland 0
Not many are giving Potomac credit
but they have outscored opponents 75-7 early on. That dominance will be
crucial for them going forward.

Oakdale 54, Catoctin 2

What stood out to us over the weekend

River Hill 15, Glenelg 12

This battle between top ten schools was the
headliner going in and lived up to the hype. River Hill makes a major jump
within our top five and proved that they had the defense to shut down elite
opponents.

Northwestern 18, City College 14
City
College fell from the rankings after struggling to move the football against
Northwestern. Many still expect this club to bounce back in a hurry.

Chopticon 30, Stone 27
Having a schedule full of games early
for Chopticon certainly did not hurt here. That experience was vital as
they made plays down the stretch to win.

Huntingtown 17,
Northern 0

The bar was set high in the preseason for the Huntingtown
defense and it showed up against Northern. Being able to get stops as
frequently as they did will make them dangerous going forward.

Milford Mill Academy 57, North Hagerstown 0
Reloading is the name of the game
but Milford Mill Academy and this victory showed that they are well on their
way. Clicking on all cylinders makes them very dangerous going forward.

Varsity Insider. Find out what colleges are after Malachi Washington, Jack
Pilkerton, Isaiah Stokes, Tevin Singleton, and Damien Farmer now!

......................................................................................................

Westlake defensive end Malachi Washington

Recruiting: “It has been the same ones with mail like Toledo and ODU. Temple
has sent some mail too.”

Visits: “Not that I know of right now.”

Places to visit: “I was planning on going back to Toledo for a visit for one of
their upcoming games. It is in two weeks and I am supposed to be going there.”

Is it an official or unofficial visit: “Official visit.”

......................................................................................................

La Plata wide receiver Jack Pilkerton

Recruiting: “As of now, I have the one offer from JMU. There have been a few
letters from Towson, Monmouth, Army, Indiana, and JMU. They have sent me tickets
to their games. I haven't really heard from any other colleges scholarship
wise.”

Visits: “I have setup a few for the schools that have offered
tickets. I’ll probably head to JMU when they play William and Mary along with
Towson when they play North Carolina Central. One of my teammates plays for
North Carolina Central. It’d be nice to see him at the college level.”

......................................................................................................

Howard athlete Isaiah Stokes

Recruiting: “For me lately, I’ve been getting interest from Lafayette,
Buffalo, Wagner, Drake, Morgan State, Seton Hill, and Shippensburg.”

Visits: “I haven't made any yet but I might possibly go to the Towson-Stony

visits.”

Private School Breakdown - September 1st

With a number of the elite private schools throughout the state in action
over the weekend, Maryland Varsity breaks down the results and what stood out.

thing!

What stood out to us over the weekend

Archbishop Wood (PA) 34, DeMatha 13

Is the WCAC up for grabs? DeMatha
struggled at times early last season and came back to finish the year strong.
With graduation hitting as hard as it did during the off-season, this three
touchdown loss is a bit concerning.

St. Edward (Ohio) 38, Gilman 7

Despite having one of the most talented and recruited teams in the state, Gilman
continues to be a major concern heading into in-state play. This group must
sacrifice for the success of the team to reach their full potential.

Friendship Collegiate Academy 14, St. Frances Academy 12
The St.
Frances Academy defense came to play allowing just two touchdowns but they must
find a way to get on the scoreboard more frequently. That could make or break
their season.

McDonogh 37, Benedictine 14
The defending MIAA
A champions flexed their muscles and continue to show just how quickly they can
reload year.

Archbishop Spalding 33, Riverdale Baptist 27

With their top playmaker moving on to graduation, Archbishop Spalding relied on
a strong line and a number of new skill players to prove that they winning ways
continued.

Mount St. Joseph 42, Bishop McNamara 7
They may
be young but Bishop McNamara needs to bounce back in a hurry and find a way to
regroup. They have an elite group of juniors but they must figure out how to
compete with the elite opponents on their schedule. The lopsided score could be
a major hit to their confidence.

VARSITY INSIDER - September 1st Edition

Maryland Varsity is bringing readers an in-depth recruiting look with the
Varsity Insider. Find out what colleges are after Myles Wolfolk, Cole
McDonough, Kirk Robinette, and Donovan Pannell now!

......................................................................................................

Wise athlete Myles Wolfolk

Offers: “Right now, I have the same six from Boston College, Clemson, UCONN,
SMU, ODU, and Illinois.”

Other schools: “It has been Rutgers, NC State,
Indiana, and some schools like that.”

Close to offering: “Right now, I’m
not sure. I think I feel Rutgers is the closest to offering but I’m not sure.”

Fall visits: “Right now I don’t have any plans for it but hopefully I’ll get
to go on some visits. I got to try and get out there some more.”

......................................................................................................

Allegany linebacker Kirk Robinette

Why did you pick James Madison?
“I went up there and really bonded with
their new coaching staff. I fell in love with the place. I had a really good
camp and impressed the coaches. I took two other visits there and they told me
that offering was like asking a girl to marry you. They wanted to be confident
that I would accept the offer. Pretty much the whole school is like one big
family. I love it.”

What other schools are in the picture as well?

“Towson offered me a half scholarship a few days before that. I was considering
that, Delaware, and William and Mary. The schools wanted to see senior film. It
was a lot of CAA schools.”

Why did you decide to do it before the season?

“I just felt like I could see myself being there for four years. I can now go
into my senior year and leading my team not worried about college. I know it is
coming but I want to be with my team.”

What did they say about your role
there?
“They are looking at me as a middle linebacker. They run a 4-3 and
expect me to come in there.”

How much did their coaches help in the
decision?
“Coach Withers is a new guy at JMU and he is bringing in a new
culture. He is the type of guy that I can step into his office and talk to him
about a problem. They are all great coaches and I respect them. They expect the
best out of you and will push you to do that. The coaches really are great
guys.”

......................................................................................................

Urbana quarterback Donovan Pannell

Recruiting:
“I’ve been talking to Penn, Monmouth, Randolph-Macon,
Amhurst, and John Hopkins.”

Visits
“I don’t have any planned but I was
able to make some to schools during the summer camp circuit. I’ve also gone to a
few junior days before.”

A favorite:
“I really like John Hopkins,
Monmouth, and Randolph-Macon. They are probably my top three with their campuses
and the schools themselves.”

......................................................................................................

Bel Air offensive lineman Cole McDonough

Camps: “I went to Delaware, Villanova, Yale, Navy, Princeton, Columbia,
Cornell, and Georgetown.”

Camp performances: “All of the camps were
pretty good. Navy and Columbia are the most interested out of them right now. A
lot of teams said they want to see the first three weeks of senior film and then
we’ll see if I can be a part of their program. The schools said I fit
academically.”

Recruiting: “I still talk a lot to Delaware, Navy, and I
get messages from Columbia and Cornell. They are trying to stay in touch and
keep me up to date.”
