The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is conflating the results of two different types of coronavirus tests, distorting several important metrics and providing the country with an inaccurate picture of the state of the pandemic. We’ve learned that the CDC is making, at best, a debilitating mistake: combining test results that diagnose current coronavirus infections with test results that measure whether someone has ever had the virus

Kristen Nordlund, a spokesperson for the CDC, told us that the inclusion of antibody data in Florida is one reason the CDC has reported hundreds of thousands more tests in Florida than the state government has. The agency hopes to separate the viral and antibody test results in the next few weeks, she said in an email.

Several states—including Pennsylvania, the site of one of the country’s largest outbreaks, as well as Texas, Georgia, and Vermont—are blending the data

USA sets a world record -- tests 700,000 people for COVID in a single day. <applause><applause>

3 million confirmed people infected with COVID in the US.
Really?
30 million people have been infected. And that is a kind estimate. Increased testing only confirms what I said here 3 months ago.

“Miami Mayor Francis X. Suarez (R) said it was “clear that the growth is exponential at this point.”

“There’s no doubt that when we reopened, people started socializing as if the virus didn’t exist,” he told ABC News. “It’s extremely worrisome.”...

Public health experts have stressed that the recent surge in cases is not the result of expanded testing capacity alone. “When the virus is under control, testing doesn’t uncover more cases. It’s a tool for keeping the epidemic at bay,” said former FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb, who served under Trump.

Gottlieb voiced doubts about the country’s ability to slow the pandemic, saying waves of infection would probably persist through the rest of the year. The situation was at least as bad as it was during the height of the outbreak in New York earlier this year, he said, except that the country was not dealing with multiple centers of infection.

“We’re not going to really be able to crush this virus at this point because there’s just so much infection around,” he said on “Face the Nation.” “We really don’t seem to have the political will to do it.”

I cannot tell what it is you are advocating. Are you advocating that we shut down, mandate staying at home, close business and keep schools closed for another year?

30 million people in America have or had COVID. Do you understand this? There will be more spikes in certain areas and declines in others. We were told this back in March. It will rise again this fall, again this winter and again next spring.

People are going to the beach, people are going to church, people are going to political rallies, millions are protesting. Masks are not a cure for any of it.

We've gone from a high daily death count of the nursing home murders to not having enough confined elderly to kill off.
Speaking of nursing home murders...

The people now screaming about wearing masks (of which I do wear one at all times as does about 90% of the population) are the same ones on the Gov. Cuomo political bandwagon. The same guy that fought the feds so 1.5 million people could flee the New York COVID epicenter to spread this disease all around the nation back in March and April. The same guy who mandated NY nursing homes take in patients with COVID until the state wound up with the highest death rate in nursing homes. Sometimes I just wonder how the human race managed to live this long.

Selective Fear Syndrome - usually associated with greed and personal selfishness

So if you are freaking out about wearing masks, you should have lost your mind knowing people have always been permitted to fly freely around the country.

U.S. Pediatricians Call For In-Person School This Fall
https://www.npr.org/sections/corona...atricians-call-for-in-person-school-this-fall

The nation's pediatricians have come out with a strong statement in favor of bringing children back to the classroom this fall. The AAP cites "mounting evidence" that transmission of the coronavirus by young children is uncommon, partly because they are less likely to contract it in the first place.

The academic, physical and mental upsides associated with returning children to schools outweigh the risks, the American Academy of Pediatrics concludes.

And, it also argues that masks are probably not practical for children younger than middle school unless they can wear a mask without increased face touching.

And they emphasize the need to make accommodations for students who are medically fragile or have special health care needs or disabilities. (like I emphasized 4 months ago)

I am certainly in agreement that the ideal scenario is for students to be back in school. That is a no-brainer for multiple reasons.

The article also states, “The nation's pediatricians have come out with a strong statement in favor of bringing children back to the classroom this fall wherever and whenever they can do so safely. The American Academy of Pediatrics' guidance "strongly advocates that all policy considerations for the coming school year should start with a goal of having students physically present in school.”

Note: “...wherever and whenever they can do so safely.”

Who will be the judge and jury on what is deemed safe?

There is also strong mention of concern for
teachers in the article due to the average age of the 1/3 of teachers being 50+.

“However, these guidelines don't necessarily address the health concerns of America's teachers or their willingness to return to in-person teaching. Federal data show nearly a third of teachers are over 50, putting them in a higher risk category when it comes to the disease.“

in other news an 8 year old shot numerous times is killed by armed protesters in atlanta at the site where Rashard Brooks was killed. But who cares about an 8 year old girl anyway.

NYC: 37 injured, 4 killed
Chicago: 63 injured, 17 killed\
Baltimore: 8 injured, 1 killed
Detroit: 5 injured, 2 killed
Greenville: 8 injured, 2 killed
Memphis: 4 injured, 1 killed

The coupon clippers on paid vacation may suddenly have the mob turn on them. If if can happen to 'Hamilton' .... well, poetic justice would be well served if the teachers are forced to go back or quit.

I say, "Hire all new young educators."

What the hell difference does it make? The schools are petri dishes of failure and bullshit.

Teachers fearful of returning to work. Like Health Care workers? Like workers at Walmart, Lowes, Best Buy, Home Depot, Super Markets, Firefighters, Police, Military Personnel, Airport workers, vacation destination workers, etc?

Nearly half the teachers I know are going on vacation this summer to the beach. If you can't go back to the classroom, you cannot go on vacation to a crowded destination.

Selective Fear Syndrome -- usually based on greed and selfishness

Who will be the judge of when it's safe. Ahhhhhh! now that is the problem with America. Trump could force schools to open but states would just fight him on it. Hence reasons this country is screwed.

If “Nearly half the teachers [you] know are going on vacation this summer to the beach” they have no excuse for not wanting to go back to school if they are called to do so.

What about those with and without underlying health conditions who have canceled their vacations this summer? I am certain you know a few of those teachers, too.

What would be wrong with having some long term substitutes get some young educators experience and get the kids back to school

So you say don't open schools until August 2021?
Because if you favor not opening now, you favor not opening until a cure. There will be "no safe" time with that type of barometer.

Everybody's favorite governor, Wolf, says masks will be around until there is a vaccine. Can you imagine trying to keep masks on kids in school all day?

Do you mean do I believe schools should open in a traditional manner - as in all students attending their assigned school buildings five days a week?

No, and I don't see 5 days a week being the norm. Any type of back in the class room. If you and I are going to continue to have an intelligent discussion, as I think we have the past 3 months or so despite a different opinion, I'm trying to figure out where you actually stand. So let me ask in another way...

If you are the sole decision maker -- how do you handle K-12 schools for this fall?

Do I believe schools throughout MD will be back in session one week prior to Labor Day or the day after Labor Day? Yes.

Will it be like a traditional beginning of a school year? No.

Schools throughout MD will have to follow the safety guidelines/procedures as provided by each county’s health department, the state of MD, and/or the MSDE.

If that means temperatures will need to be taken before students enter a school building, that will need to occur. If that means students, faculty, and staff are required to wear masks indoors, that is what will need to occur. If that means only “X” amount of students can attend the physical site of a school at any given time due to social distancing requirements and a limit on how many students can ride a bus, that will need to occur. If that means that on alternate days online learning is necessary, that will need to occur.

I certainly don’t envy any school system nation-wide as such “costly” decisions are made.

If the health department gives the okay for full-time attendance to occur, that would be great.

There are multiple variables that will need to be considered, regardless of the color code of the current situation.

I encourage you to check out Carroll County’s plan. A hybrid model will be used in which only 25% of students in the county attend schools each day - meaning students only attend one day each week with virtual learning occurring when students are not in their schools. As noted on the CCPS website, “The fifth day will be for virtual instruction and cleaning/sanitizing of buildings and buses.”

I would encourage you to research “MD Together: MD’s Recovery Plan for Education” for further guidance.

Yes, schools in MD will begin on time, but it is highly likely the opening of the school year will look much different than a typical school year. It will also most likely look much different from county to county.

Peace to all.

OK, thanks.
Are you good with this type of planning? Is it what you would recommend as well? Again, I ask because 4 months from now I may read your thoughts that we opened schools too soon.

Todd have you heard any rumors about MPSSAA moving football (and basically all fall sports) to the spring?

I have not heard that other than it just being an idea from non-MPSSAA sources months ago. I just put in some emails and texts to my MPSSAA contacts to see if they have heard anything and will post what I find here. Honestly, I'm waiting like most to get out of this "I don't know" phase. Red tape liability will be difficult to cut through in all this.

I can say that all youth and pee wee teams started involuntary conditioning yesterday. There was no social distancing with the kids. Fort Hill began weight lifting in the school in groups of 8 as outlined by county guidelines.

What's interesting is knowing our local pee wee and youth organizations are not tied into schools. They have no Board to answer to until it comes to using facilities. Some use school facilities, others use private land.
