Fort Hill football to play team from New York

FORT HILL FOOTBALL SCHEDULE UPDATE

The Sentinels have picked up a new varsity football opponent for the 2024 season on October 19. The opponent is East/World of Inquiry out of Rochester, NY. They will replace Riverdale Baptist on the schedule.

This will be a home game at Greenway Avenue Stadium on Saturday at 3:00.

East/World of Inquiry finished 12-1 last season. Their only loss was in the New York Class A state semi-finals.
The year before (2022) East/World of Inquiry finished 10-1. Their only loss was in the third round of the playoffs.

East/World of Inquiry is a combination of two schools. East High School and World of Inquiry School No. 58. Since World of Inquiry School does not offer football as a sport, they are permitted to play at East High School.

Rochester is a 5 hour 20 minute drive to Cumberland and is located on Lake Ontario in upstate New York between Buffalo and Syracuse. Rochester is the 10th largest city in New York with a population of 211,000. In comparison, Frederick MD has a population of 82,000.

Since 2017, Fort Hill football has played teams from Ohio (Wadsworth) and Florida (Melbourne Central Catholic) for the first time in school history. This will be the first time Fort Hill has played a football team from New York.

WV football classes

WV has 4 classes looks like Bridgeport is the largest school in 3A and Frankfort is the smallest school in 3A now. The formula they use looks crazy, Frankfort has a small enrollment, but they got bumped up because there location score was high being close to Cumberland. What the heck?? can someone make sense out of this formula seems odd or I’m not understanding what I’m hearing

FORT HILL RELEASES 2024 FOOTBALL SCHEDULES - Varsity, JV and Freshman

LINK: 2024 FORT HILL FOOTBALL SCHEDULES

Fort Hill will open their 2024 varsity football season with the first two games on the road, the first in Accident versus Northern Garrett.

Changes to the varsity schedule from last season include a two year deal for Week Two versus the Dunbar Poets out of Baltimore. The first year (2024) will be at Dunbar, the second year (2025) will be at Greenway Avenue Stadium. The game at Dunbar is set to be played at Morgan State University either on Friday or Saturday, that has yet to be determined based on field availability. Both teams are in the midst of a very rare consecutive three time state championship run and have posted a combined 77-1 record during that time.

Briar Woods out of Ashburn, VA will visit Fort Hill in Week Five. This will be the second year of the contract after Fort Hill traveled there last season on the same week and defeated a then undefeated Briar Woods 28-0.

Joining the Fort Hill schedule for the first time in school history will be Riverdale Baptist. The private school out of Upper Marlboro, MD in Prince George's County finished last season with a 6-4 record after having lost to some quality football teams in Bishop McNamara, Paul VI, Georgetown Prep and Friendship Collegiate by a mere 18 points combined. The Crusaders were ranked as high as No. 20 in the Maryland State Media Poll.

Smithsburg comes back to the schedule after a one year hiatus. This will be a three year deal between the two schools with 2024 and 2026 games to be played at Smithsburg. The 2025 game will be at Greenway Avenue Stadium.

The rest of the schedule falls in line with last season. Fort Hill will travel to Mountain Ridge on Week Six where the Miners currently have a 26 game winning streak. The Miners last lost at home in 2019 and are the only team to have beaten Fort Hill since the 2020 COVID season ended, a 30-8 victory in 2022 on the same field in Frostburg.

Southern Garrett cancelled their varsity season last year but will rebound to have a varsity squad for 2024. That Week Three game will be played at Greenway Avenue Stadium on a Thursday night at 7:00 pm.

The annual Homecoming game against cross-town rival Allegany is set for Saturday, November 2.

For the first time since 2019, Fort Hill will field a full time 9th grade freshman squad. Two games were set up last year in an attempt to get players extra time on the field. This season will include a full eight game schedule. The Freshman and JV schedules are set with only one open date left to be filled for both.

Please keep in mind that all schedules are subject to change, especially the Freshman and JV schedules. Many fall sports programs, both girls and boys, have to share Greenway Avenue Stadium, which forces inevitable changes to be made.

GO BIG RED!

Maddox Twigg

For those of us that saw Maddox play football we know he is a big time athlete. Not often in this area do 8th graders get attention. He also plays basketball. There is a video circulating around of him making a block from behind. In the video it looks like his entire hand to his wrist is higher than the rim. The kid was going a for lay-up and Maddox ran him down from behind and made a great block.

WPIAL going away from point system and will have a football committee make the playoff selections

The WPIAL on Tuesday revealed a new system for determining teams while finalizing its postseason plans for next football season.

Rather than rely on mathematical formulas as was done previously, the WPIAL will empower its football committee to choose at-large qualifiers. That’s a big change since five of the six classifications have wild card teams.

The number of playoff qualifiers varies by class.

Class 6A – four qualifiers

Class 5A – 12 qualifiers (top three in each conference plus three wild cards)

Class 4A – eight qualifiers (top two in each conference plus two wild cards)

Class 3A – 12 qualifiers (top three in each conference plus three wild cards)

Class 2A – 13 qualifiers (top three in each conference plus four wild cards)

Class A – 16 qualifiers (top three in each conference plus four wild cards)

WPIAL administrator Vince Sortino said members of the football committee now can evaluate a team’s entire season rather than rely on the mathematical formulas.

Northern Schedule 2024

I was missing the 10/11 week which According to MaxPreps was filled by Uniontown, here is the Huskies schedule:
9/6 Fort Hill
9/13 Albert Gallatin
9/20 @Hancock
9/27 @ Frankfort
10/4 @Hampshire
10/11 Uniontown
10/18 Mountain Ridge
10/25 @ Allegany
11/1 @ Southern Garrett

For some reason MaxPreps is missing the Hancock game and has the Frankfort game on 9/23, guessing that is a typo or something. Pretty decent but challenging schedule for a school the size of Northern's.

Alco 2024 Varsity football schedule

Week 2: Oakdale at Alco

City Turf baseball and softball fields

Since we have a million dollar city football field for both schools and sports to use, isn’t it time we make a push for a full turf softball and turf baseball field with lights. Spring is tough to get games played in our area and it would make a lot of sense to have fields that would be playable during wet weather conditions for both schools to share. It seems there is open space in the old Memorial Hospital field and already has parking space.
