Class 2A Quarterfinal Playoff Preview and Predictions - 11/21

What Class 2A teams does Maryland Varsity feel be playing in the semifinals
after this weekend? We answer that question now while talking about
all of the quarterfinal games, who wins, and the potential of an upset as well.
Subscribe today and never miss a thing!

#1 Middletown (11-0) vs. #2 South
Carroll (9-2)
Prediction: Middletown 35, South Carroll 14
Why: The
overall consistency of Middletown. The Knights have dominated during much
of 2013 and they have the athletes to do the same here.
Upset
Potential: Low
Game Changer: Brad Rinehart, Middletown

#4 Patterson
(7-3) vs. #2 Dunbar (9-2)
Prediction: Dunbar 28, Patterson 3
Why:
Although Patterson has won their last three games by a score of 153-0, Dunbar
dominated them in their late September matchup. The two teams will be
closer this time around but the Poets have been dominating defensively and get
the job done here once again.
Upset Potential: Low
Game Changer:
William Crest, Dunbar

#1 Patuxent (11-0) vs. #2 Gwynn Park (11-0)

Prediction: Patuxent 30, Gwynn Park 28
Why: The ability of Patuxent to
pull out victory against top teams. This club came to play during much of
2013 and feels that it has the weapons to live another day. This is one of
the best quarterfinal matchups in any of the classes.
Upset
Potential: Very High
Game Changer: Tyler Crounse, Patuxent

#1
Fallston (11-0) vs. #3 Kent Island (9-2)
Prediction: Fallston 24, Kent
Island 20
Why: Fallston has more weapons offensively and will utilize those
players to control the football. Kent Island has been very hot as late but the
higher seed will move on.
Upset Potential: Medium
Game
Changer: The Fallston offensive line

#1 Quince Orchard (10-1) vs. #2
Northwest (9-2)
Prediction: Quince Orchard 22, Northwest 20
Why: A
rematch of the November 1st upset victory for Northwest. That loss has not
sat well with Quince Orchard and the Cougars have the playmakers to turn the
tables here. Expect a much better performance from this group.

Upset Potential: High
Game Changer: Mike Murtaugh, Quince Orchard

#1 Paint Branch vs. #2 Perry Hall (10-1)
Prediction: Paint Branch 28,
Perry Hall 20
Why: The regular season schedule of Paint Branch has them
battled tested and ready to make it to the semifinals. Also don't forget
about the high powered offense from Paint Branch.
Upset Potential: Medium

Game Changer: Gaston Cooper, Paint Branch

#1 Suitland (11-0) vs. #2
DuVal (10-1)
Prediction: Suitland 13, DuVal 10
Why: A dominating
defense at Suitland has not given up double digits since late September.
This group is playing lights out and it shows once again here.
Upset
Potential: Medium
Game Changer: Wesley Wolfork, Suitland

#4 Arundel (9-2) vs. #2 Meade (9-2)
Prediction: Meade 28 Arundel 27
Why:
Arundel may be one of the hottest teams in Class 4A over the last few weeks but
Meade gets a chance to avenge a loss that occurred just two weeks ago.
Beating a good team in that short of a span is a very difficult challenge.

Game Changer: Kyle Evans, Meade

VARSITY INSIDER - November 19th Edition

Maryland Varsity is bringing readers an in-depth recruiting look with the
Varsity Insider. Find out what colleges are after Keiron Howard, Eric
Burrell, Kareem Montgomery, Will McClain, Dwayne Haskins Jr., and Nick Nelson now!

......................................................................................................

Middletown lineman Will McClain

Recruiting: “I just went to the Maryland-Syracuse game this last weekend.”

Others: “Not really.”

The Maryland visit: “It was good. I had a good
time. I got to see their facilities and it was nice.”

Upcoming visits:
“No, not at all.”

......................................................................................................

Bullis quarterback Dwayne Haskins Jr.

Recruiting: “I went to the West Virginia scouting camp during the summer.”

A favorite college growing up: “I don’t have a favorite college.”

......................................................................................................

McDonogh athlete Eric Burrell

Recruiting: “I had USC send me some letters. Then there has been Oregon
State, Oregon, Notre Dame, and schools like that have sent stuff.”

Visits: “I haven't but I think next year I’ll go on some college visits.”

......................................................................................................

McDonogh athlete Kareem Montgomery

Recruiting: “I get mail from Cincinnati. I just came back from James Madison
for a game. There is also mail from Missouri and I’ve just been sending out film
to see what happens.”

The visit at James Madison: “I really liked it
there. It is a nice campus and I like the coaches. They score a lot of points
and I like that. They ended up losing but it was a good game.”

Upcoming
trips: “I’ll be going to Cincinnati on December 5th when they play Louisville. I
think that’ll be a good game.”

A favorite college growing up: “My
favorite college has always been USC. They just got a big win.”

......................................................................................................

Potomac defensive tackle Keiron Howard

Recruiting: “So far (I have offers from) Hampton, Temple, and Tennessee. I’ve
been getting letters from Clemson, Maryland, Pittsburgh, East Carolina, NC
State, Auburn, Rutgers, Indiana, and more.”

Visits: “I visited Tennessee,
Vanderbilt, Maryland, NC State, and some other schools in the summer time.”

Visits coming up: “I don’t know yet. My coach hasn’t told me yet.”

A
favorite: “So far it is Tennessee. When I went down there, I love d the
environment, the coaches, and their academics. The coaches showed good love. I
like how excited they were and the facilities there.”

A final decision:
“I don’t know yet.”

A pre summer decision: “I’m not really sure. I’ll
wait it out until more offers come.”

......................................................................................................

Suitland athlete Nick Nelson

Why he picked Hawaii: “I felt it was a good choice. I don’t really know much
about them but I’ll take my visit there pretty soon.

More on his
decision: “When I was talking to their coaches, they talked about playing early
and stuff like that. I looked at their schedule and they play USC a lot. That
has a good look.”

The biggest factors in deciding: “It was the early
playing time and that is basically it.”

Others considered: “A few schools
have come to my school like Wake Forest, Old Dominion, and Towson. Those schools
were close to offering.”

Distance being a factor: “Not really.”

The Hawaii coaches: “They have a coach that is from the same area I am from. He
was telling me a lot of stuff.”

Fall visits: “I know I’ll be going to
Hawaii. I’ll probably end up going to ODU and Wake Forest.”

VARSITY INSIDER - November 12th Edition

Maryland Varsity is bringing readers an in-depth recruiting look with the
Varsity Insider. Find out what colleges are after Camari Murray, Micah
Keels, Lawrence Cager, and Kirk Robinette now!

......................................................................................................

Bishop McNamara wide receiver Camari Murray

Recruiting: “My coach has been telling me a bunch of schools have been
calling asking for film. I know it has been Illinois, ODU, Ball State, and I
believe there is one more.”

A favorite college growing up: “I like LSU,
Ohio State, Maryland, and Florida State.”

......................................................................................................

Allegany linebacker Kirk Robinette

Recruiting: “It has been Old Dominion, Arizona State, West Virginia, and
Towson.”

Plans for visits: “Not at the moment.”

......................................................................................................

Calvert Hall wide receiver Lawrence Cager

Recruiting: “There are not any new offers but I have more interest. Michigan
State, Vanderbilt, Ohio State, and Michigan are basically the four big ones
lately.”

Fall visits: “I haven't done any visits this fall but I might go
to the Maryland-Virginia Tech game.”

Schools recruiting the hardest: “I
think Virginia Tech, Michigan State, and NC State are the ones recruiting me the
hardest.”

......................................................................................................

Calvert Hall defensive back Micah Keels

Recruiting: “I was at the Charlotte game (Saturday). I’ve also heard from
ODU, VC, Toledo, Cincinnati, and then a little bit from Marshall and Northern
Colorado.”

The Charlotte visit: “I loved it actually. It was not the
biggest school but it was really nice. Everything is brand new. They are
building everything up and it’ll be nice.”

Offer talk: “I’m going to ODU
next weekend and I still have to talk to the recruiting coach from Charlotte.”

A favorite: “It is probably Boston College. Academically it is one of the
best schools. Football wise they are in the ACC and in a good area.”

Class 4A Playoff Preview and Predictions - 11/11

What Class 4A teams does Maryland Varsity feel will be moving into the second
round of the postseason? We answer that question now while talking about
all of the games, who wins, and the potential of an upset as well.
Subscribe today and never miss a thing!

West
No. 4 Clarksburg (7-3) at
No. 1 Quince Orchard (9-1)
Prediction: Quince Orchard 42, Clarksburg 14

Why: Too many weapons offensively for Quince Orchard. They have scored at
least five touchdowns in each of their last seven games.
Upset
Potential: Low

No. 3 Gaithersburg (8-2) at No. 2 Northwest (8-2)

Prediction: Northwest 27, Gaithersburg 22
Why: If the Northwest team that
knocked off Quince Orchard shows up, then this club lives another day.

Upset Potential: Medium

North
No. 4 Sherwood (7-3) at No. 1 Paint
Branch (9-1)
Prediction: Paint Branch 48, Sherwood 20
Why: The game will
be closer than their first matchup but the athleticism at Paint Branch is
confident and has the firepower to continue finding the end zone with ease.

Upset Potential: Low

No. 3 Howard (8-2) at No. 2 Perry Hall (9-1)

Prediction: Perry Hall 22, Howard 20
Why: Nine straight wins and momentum on
their side are what Perry Hall will utilize to win this battle.

Upset Potential: Medium

South
No. 4 Flowers (7-3) at No. 1 Suitland
(10-0)
Prediction: Suitland 31, Flowers 6
Why: The defense that Suitland
brings to the table has not given up double digits since September. These
athletes come to play ready for the postseason.
Upset Potential:
Low

No. 3 Wise (7-3) at No. 2 DuVal (9-1)
Prediction: Wise 22, DuVal
21
Why: DuVal has had a more complete season overall but the motivation of
losing earlier in the year propels Wise to an upset victory.
Upset
Potential: Medium

East
No. 4 Arundel (8-2) at No. 1 Old Mill (10-0)

Prediction: Old Mill 28, Arundel 20
Why: Old Mill's knack for making big
plays down the stretch help them get past a stubborn group from Arundel.

Upset Potential: Medium

No. 3 Broadneck (8-2) at No. 2 Meade (8-2)

Prediction: Broadneck 29, Meade 27
Why:Like DuVal, Broadneck is fired up to
turn the tables on Meade and is beyond motivated for this matcup. Making
up a six point deficit for a contest that happened just weeks ago gives the
Bruins the edge.
Upset Potential: High

predictions now as well!
