Football Quote Board - 10/9

The Quote Board is a feature from Maryland Varsity where we quote some of the
top athletes throughout the state on their opponent this week on the football
field. Quotes included are from Loyola Blakefield vs. Gilman, Wise vs.
Roosevelt, Northwest vs. Paint Brnach, St. Frances vs. Archbishop Spalding, and
Bishop McNamara vs. Good Counsel.

Loyola Blakefield linebacker Darren Seward

Opponent - Gilman

Gilman
“We just have really been preparing for
everything. We think we can beat them. We’ll play hard and not give up.”

The Gilman players
“It is Gilman so they are always good. They have a
quarterback that we have to account for. We have to take into account how big
their line is.”

Keys to a victory
“I think it is who comes out to play
that day. If we come out and have a good day, we can have success. If we don’t
come out and are not ready to play, it is anyone’s game.”

..........................................................................................................

Wise linebacker John Daka
Opponent -
Roosevelt

Roosevelt
“They are a very tough team. It’ll probably
be the second toughest team we have faced this year. They got a lot of talent
and they’ll be very physical.”

The Roosevelt players
“I know they got
Isaiah Prince and it is hard to miss him. We still have to do our scout so I
don’t know much about their other players.”

Keys to a victory
“It’ll
be whoever executes first and makes the lead mistakes. It boils down to
executing what the game plan is from the coaches.”

..........................................................................................................

Paint Branch linebacker Jordan Hill
Opponent
- Northwest

Northwest
“We know that they are a good team
obviously. They are rated #1. We are going in preparing and are not afraid of
any team. We will work hard and have to put ourselves in a position to get that
W.”

The Northwest players
“They are really fast. I’ve been watching
film and #1 is a big play guy. E.J. Lee is their running back. From what I’ve
seen, those two guys are their main guys. We’ll work hard to try and get them
off of their game as much as possible.”

Keys to a victory
“I think we
have to be physical. We have to hit them first and during the entire four
quarters. We have to follow the game plan because everyone understands that we
have to do the little things that can give us an advantage.”

..........................................................................................................

St. Frances athlete Nate Racks
Opponent -
Archbishop Spalding

Archbishop Spalding
“I don’t know much about
Spalding but we’ll watch some film and get a good study in to see what they do.
From what I’ve heard, they are a pretty decent team. We have to come ready to
work.”

The Archbishop Spalding players
“No, not that I’m too familiar
with.”

Keys to a victory
“We need to stick together and keep each
other up. At the end of the day, we are one as a team. We have to stick together
and work hard.”

..........................................................................................................

Bishop McNamara quarterback Ramar Williams

Opponent - Good Counsel

Good Counsel
“I haven't watched the film
yet but from last year they tried to take away the passing game. This year, if
we can pass we’ll be fine.”

The Good Counsel players
“From what I have
seen, they have an outstanding run defense. They have great players on both
sides of the ball. We are looking forward to playing them.”

......................................................................................................

Loyola Blakefield linebacker Darren Seward

Recruiting:
“I receive a lot of mail every day from Boston College. There
has been some stuff from West Virginia, Temple, Rutgers, Missouri, and I went
down to Maryland for their camp. Over the summer, I took a visit to Alabama and
I just went down to Boson College for a game visit.”

Upcoming trips:

“I’ve been trying to get down to West Virginia and Maryland. We have had a game
on the day I’ve been trying to get down there.”

Recruiting the hardest:

“I would say Boston College, Rutgers, and Temple.”

......................................................................................................

Wise linebacker John Daka

“There have been a lot of colleges. Penn State was at my game
on Friday. They have been sending a lot of letters. It has also been Boston
College, Old Dominion, Stanford, Rutgers, Florida State, Pitt, Auburn, and a
couple more.”

or Maryland. I want to see some of these colleges when we have a Friday game.”

......................................................................................................

Paint Branch linebacker Jordan Hill

game. They wanted me to come up so I did. II went to the Penn camp over the
summer and they said that they liked me.”

The Maryland trip
“I liked
the facilities. It was pretty cool. It was the first time I had a chance to have
an experience like that so it opened my eyes.”

Upcoming trips
“No, not
any upcoming visits.”

......................................................................................................

St. Frances athlete Nate Racks

Recruiting:
“Over the summer, Robert Morris offered me and so did North
Carolina Central. We went on a tour at East Carolina and I talked to their
coaches. I did really well at Rutgers and they liked me. We went to UCONN and
they told me that they will watch my senior film. I also have heard from
Towson.”

Fall visits:
“No, I haven't taken any visits.”

Visit

“I’m waiting to hear back from UCONN. I am looking to take a visit to
there and North Carolina Central. Those are the two that I know for a fact I’ll
go on so far.”

Virginia Tech, North Carolina, and Auburn.”

Football Quote Board - 10/1

The Quote Board is a feature from Maryland Varsity where we quote some of the
top athletes throughout the state on their opponent this week on the football
field. Quotes included are from Manchester Valley vs. South Carroll, St. Mary's
vs. Boy's Latin, Perry Hall vs. Catonsville, Urbana vs. Walkersville, and
Einstein vs. Paint Branch.

St. Mary's athlete Brady McMillan
Opponent - Boy's
Latin

On Boy's Latin:
“We are watching film on them but know they
are a tough team. Last year was a hard game and we lost to them. They have good
linemen and athletes. We have to go in ready to play.”

Their players:

“I don’t know much about their personnel. They have a pretty talented kicker and
some good athletes.”

Keys to a victory
“I think overall it is cutting
back on turnovers. That is a big factor with the game. We have also had too many
penalties. Overall, the winner will be who is more disciplined.”

..........................................................................................................

South Carroll lineman Brian Plumber
Opponent -
Manchester Valley

On Manchester Valley:
“I haven't watched any
film on them this year. From last year, I think it should be a good game. It be
a good game.”

Their players:
“I don’t know much about their team
personnel wise but I know one of their tackles. I grew up playing against the
team and always seem to go against him because he was a defensive lineman.”

Keys to a victory:
“It’ll come down to our offense. Our defense has been
playing pretty solid. Friday night, we scored a lot of points off of our passing
game. Once we get the pass game and run game going, I think we’ll be a
formidable team.”

..........................................................................................................

Perry Hall athlete Malik Morris
Opponent -
Catonsville

On Catonsville:
“Coach told us that they are a good
team. They are well coached so we’ll have to prepare ourselves. We have to watch
film and focus. If we do that, we should come out on top.”

The
Catonsville players:
“I don’t know much about their players individually but
past versions of their team they have been run heavy.”

Keys to a victory:

“We have to score early on offense and our offense has to catch the ball. Our
defense has to stop the run and focus on turning them into a passing team.”

..........................................................................................................

Urbana running back Ray Gray
Opponent -
Walkersville

On Walkersville:
“I know Wallkersville is a run
heavy team. From the looks of it, they are better than last year. They gave
Middletown a good fight. We have to come out and play our ball. If we come out
and play better football, we can handle them pretty well.”

Keys to a
victory:
“We need to stop their run that is the number one thing. We want to
make them throw the ball. They don’t want o throw the ball because their
quarterback doesn’t have a strong arm. On offense, our line has to second to the
linebackers in the second level.”

..........................................................................................................

Paint Branch wide receiver Ryan Stango
Opponent -
Einstein

On Einstein:
“I think we should take care of them pretty
easily. Coach gives us an honest review on the team for each game. We are going
to get prepared and take it one by one.”

Keys to a victory:
“Coach
says if we play to our full potential, we can beat any team. If we play our
best, no one can stop us.”

Douglass 51, Crossland 0

In their first four games of 2014, (2A)
Douglass has outscored opponents 171-0. Regardless of who they played, that
number is jaw dropping.

Urbana 21, Oakdale 20
In what may
have been the game of the week in all classes, Urbana narrowly pulled out a hard
fought victory over an up and coming squad from Oakdale. Don't be surprised to
see these two programs lock horns again in the playoffs.

Easton 33,

A win is a win this time of year but Parkside gave Easton
everything that they had.

Middletown 13, Walkersville 12
A

Middletown. This club just didn't have the athletes to put up enough points on

What stood out to us over the weekend

DeMatha 21, St. John's 7

If they were not the favorite to win the WCAC
title before this game, they are now. Taking down their rivals this weekend in
Good Counsel could give them a dominating early lead.

Gilman 42, St.
Frances 16

After a slow start early on, the Gilman offense really
started moving the chains. The amount of athleticism that this team has was on
full display here.

Good Counsel 17, Gonzaga 7
Many knew the
Good Counsel defense was good but they can make a case for being one of the best
in all of Maryland. Holding a potent unit at Gonzaga to just seven points is
impressive.

Bullis 42, Friendship Collegiate Academy 21
This
Bullis squad continues to pass every test that comes their way. They continue to
take more steps to closer to completing the 2014 season undefeated.

Calvert Hall 17, Archbishop Spalding 10

This version of Calvert Hall
continues to put the 2013 in the distant past. They won their fourth game of
2014 and are working hard for a strong finish down the stretch.

Landon 35, St. Paul's 35

In one of the stranger games of the year, a tie
was the end result due to darkness. Both clubs came ready to play and it showed
early and often.

From some surprising upsets and key victories, subscribe today and never miss a
thing!

What stood out to us over the weekend

Northwest 48, Gaithersburg 0
The defending champions from Northwest
have dominated their last four opponents by a combined score of 186-6. This
group knows how to play at an elite level and it shows every weekend.

Paint Branch 39, Churchill 29
Graduation or not, Paint Branch has
reloaded to replace the athletes that have moved on and it showed in an
impressive victory over Churchill. The victory pushes them to #7 in our weekly
rankings.

Meade 55, Chesapeake 6
Can anyone score on this
defensive? Meade continues to put up impressive numbers offensively but it may
their athletes defensively that help them to a deep playoff run.

Stone 22, North Point 7

After an impressive start offensively in 2014,
the North Point playmakers failed to move the chains while scoring just a single
touchdown. That was down from the 60-spot they put up the previous week.

Franklin 58, Perry Hall 21
The Perry Hall defense must do more
if they hope to make a run when it matters the most in the postseason. A loss is
not a shock but the lopsided score does stand out.

Northwestern 25,
High Point 0

Three straight games, three straight shutouts for
Northwestern. Can they pull off a fourth straight against a talented group from
Wise up next?

Maryland Varsity is bringing readers an in-depth recruiting look with the
Varsity Insider. Find out what colleges are after Brian Plumber, Ryan
Stango, Brady McMillan, Ray Gray, and Malik Morris now!

......................................................................................................

St. Mary's athlete Brady McMillan

Recruiting:
“Right now, I am actually considering Delaware, Towson,
Bucknell, Holy Cross, and Navy. Those are the schools in contact with me right
now. I haven't really figured it out but those are the schools that I’ve been
recruited by.”

Visits:
“I visited Duke and I’m going to Holy Cross,
Towson, and hopefully Delaware soon.”

September calls:
“Delaware,
Towson, and Holy Cross have.”

Offers:
“Offer wise, not yet.”

A
favorite:
“Right now, I’d say my top three are Delaware, Towson, and Holy
Cross.”

......................................................................................................

South Carroll lineman Brian Plumber

Recruiting:
“I’ve been talking to the University of Delaware a little bit.
I went to the University of Delaware prospect camp. I also went to camps at the
University of Maryland and Towson.”

College visits:
“No, I haven't
made any yet.”

Plans for visits:
“Any college that will offer to have
me come up to one of their games is somewhere I’d go.”

A favorite college
growing up:
“I’ve always been a Virginia Tech fan. I’ve grown up watching
Beamer call and I have always thought about going there.”

......................................................................................................

Perry Hall athlete Malik Morris

Recruiting:
“I haven't had a lot of recruiting but I’ve been getting
a little bit of mail.”

Mail:
“It has been Towson that has been sending
me and my brother mail. West Virginia has been sending little advertisements
about their school. We also got a couple of Division II schools.”

Visits:

“Me and my brother are going to the Towson game next Saturday for an unofficial
visit.”

A favorite:
“The school that stands out the most is Towson
because they are the most interested in me and my brother. Also West Virginia
because they are my dream school.”

......................................................................................................

Urbana running back Ray Gray

Temple:
“It has been a great thing watching them. They play good football.
My cousin transferred there and he’ll be a sophomore when I get there. I came to
a few practice and he was doing his thing. I’ll go up to a game and it is always
great to see them Temple play football.”

Others still interested:

“Marshall is not lightening up and neither is ECU. Those are the main three with
Marshall, ECU, and Temple.”

Other visits:
“There is still a chance
there. My family feels Temple is a great school for me but as the year goes on
you never know. My dad is a big influence on where I go at the end of the day so
I want to pick a school that is a good fit.”

Official visit talk:

“They all have said something but I've been really busy with the football
season.”

......................................................................................................

Paint Branch wide receiver Ryan Stango

Recruiting:
“There are a couple of smaller schools like Stevenson,
Shippensburg, and I have some interest from JMU and Towson.”

Game day
visits:
“I went to Shippensburg last fall and went up to their campus just
last June so that was a fun experience.”

A favorite:
“I really enjoy
Stevenson and Shippensburg too. I’m going to visit JMU soon because Javonn Curry
always texts me about all the schools stuff with their school.”

What stood out to us over the weekend

Fort Hill 44, Silver Oak Academy 22
With some of the elite 1A teams going
down over the weekend, the success at Fort Hill continued with a double digit
victory.

Mergenthaler Vo-Tech 18, Douglass 8
A potent offense at
Douglass learned that they have some things to work on and it showed with a top
tier for here.

Wilson 27, Surrattsville 20
Does the Surrattsville
defense have the ability to stop the best offenses that they play? The answer to
that question will dictate how high the ceiling that this group can be.

Edmondson-Westside 42, Digital Harbor 0
The 82-0 score of their last two
games is why Edmondson-Westside is among the elite in 1A.

Friendship
Academy Engineering & Tech 30, Poly 6
Do they have the best defense in Class
1A?

Fairmont Heights 24, Largo 12
The experience against larger
schools will continue to pay dividends for Fairmont Heights as the postseason
gets closer and closer.

What stood out to us over the weekend

Damascus
19, Quince Orchard 11
Battling an elite Class 4A foe and knocking them off
with a stellar defensive effort shows that Damascus may be in the running for
the 3A crown.

Huntington 32, Calvert 0
Is anyone going to score on
them? Three games and three shutouts in the books.

River Hill 42,
Atholton 0
The dominance continues. After beating Glenelg in the opener,
River Hill has won their last two games by a score of 83-6.

Northwest
46, Seneca Valley 6
The loss is not the surprised. Just how lopsided it was
is.

Milford Mill Academy 48, New Town 12
Their offense never gets
attention but it has been one of the most potent in all of Maryland this fall.

Potomac 43, Friendly 16
After going 5-5 a year ago, a talented group
at Potomac has nearly matched their win total for 2014.

Football Quote Board - 9/25

The Quote Board is a feature from Maryland Varsity where we quote some of the
top athletes throughout the state on their opponent this week on the football
field. Quotes included are from Perry Hall vs. Franklin, Landon vs. St. Paul's,
Whitman vs. Wootton, Southern vs. Broadneck, and Aberdeen vs. C. Milton Wright..

Whitman tight end Anton Casey
Opponent - Wootton

Improvement:
“We need to improve on just executing our offense. We need to
just have some practice installing what we need to do and perfecting our game
plan.”

On Wootton:
“They are a solid team. We have looked at them on
tape and we’ll be ready for them. The coaches are doing a scouting report and
we’ll definitely see some film on them. We’ll definitely prepare for the game.”

The Wootton players:
“The one name that has stood out is Sam Ellis, their
quarterback. He has experience from last year. A lot of players and coaches left
from last year but he is a name I remember. He is a pretty good quarterback. We
will be preparing for him.”

Keys to a victory:
“I think we need to
stop the passing game and just execute on offense. Those are the keys for us.
They pass a lot so we have to stop that first. That will be key to our success.”

..........................................................................................................

Broadneck quarterback Canaan Gebele
Opponent -
Southern

Improvements:
“We run a fast tempo offense and our game
has done really well the first two weeks. In week three, we got our passing game
going. We want to make sure to make great balance with the two.”

On
Southern:
“They always got size. They run a double wing offense. Our defense
is getting a look that we haven't gotten so far. On offense, they run a four man
front we haven't seen that we have to get used to. We like our matchups.”

Keys to a victory:
“It is setting the tempo. We have to be able to set
it early and keep it rolling. That leads to success when we fatigue the defense
and put them on their heels.”

...........................................................................................................

Aberdeen athlete Mark Meynisse
Opponent - C. Milton
Wright

Improvement:
“Overall as a team, we have to improve on
making more tackles and getting more completions. We have to flow to the ball.”

On C. Milton Wright:
“It is going to be a pretty good game and I am
looking forward to it. They are a good challenge and have a couple of really
good players. I look forward to the game and having a great game.”

Keys
to a victory:
“It is making tackles and wrapping up. We have to make plays
and convert when we can. On defense, we have to flow to the ball and make
tackles.”

...........................................................................................................

Perry Hall running back Mike Morris
Opponent -
Franklin

Team improvement:
“I think that we can communicate more
and be more successful. We can’t lose our composure on the field. I think that
will help make us more successful.”

On Franklin:
“I think it is going
to be the same thing as last year. They are a spread team and they got a ton of
athletes. We know practice makes perfect, We got to scout them and be ready.
That is pretty much it.”

Their players:
“Everybody knows Steven
Smothers and the twins. We are not really focusing on just them. We are focusing
on the whole team as one. We want to prepare for the whole team.”

Keys to
a victory:
“I think that we have to not turn the ball over at all and keep
our composure. We have to communicate.”

...........................................................................................................

Landon linebacker Paul Padalino
Opponent - St.
Paul's

Improvement:
“For us, it is consistency, limiting
penalties, and turnovers. Those were things that would kill us for league games.
We got to get better at those and everything. We got to keep working.”

St. Paul’s:
“They are a good team and they beat us last year. We think we got
a better team this year and we are looking forward to playing them. They are
very physical. We have two different styles of offense and that is fun to play
against. Defensively we got to step up and hold them the best we can.”

Their players:
“I have not seen a whole bunch on them yet so I couldn’t you
exactly.”

Keys to a victory:
“That game is definitely going to be
determined on turnovers. If we win the turnover battle and field position
battle, we will win that game I believe. We have to finish drives and limit our
turnovers.”

From some surprising upsets and key victories, subscribe today and never miss a

What stood out to us over the weekend

Kent Island 42, Wicomico 7
A top ten battle ends early in the form
of a blowout. Kent Island has the playmakers needed to make a deep postseason
run.

Oakdale 49, Winters Mill 27
Their first true test of
the fall will be this week against Urbana but it is hard to argue with what they
did in this double digit victory.

Douglass 38, Gwynn Park 0

Three games down, three shutouts. This defense has been nasty in 2014.

Oakland Mills 40, Hammond 31
The upset was enough to push Oakland
Mills into the top ten. This offense is very potent.

Potomac 43,
Friendly 16

What happened to the Friendly offense? This club has
talent but struggled to move the chains against a talented group at Potomac.

From some surprising upsets and key victories, subscribe today and never miss a
thing!

What stood out to us over the weekend

Gilman 20, Good Counsel 0

In what certainly ended up being the private
game of the weekend, the athletes on the Gilman defense put on a show in
shutting out Good Counsel. That ferocity could make them dangerous when
they get their rematch against McDonogh.

DeMatha 47, Eastern
Christian Academy 26

ECA may be new to the party but this program is not
ready to compete with the elite programs in the state just yet. DeMatha
continues to grow week after week and will be very dangerous when everything is
said and done.

Bullis 30, St. Mary's 20
The games
continue to remain close but Bullis has a knack for finishing out foes. It
showed here.

Mount St. Joseph 35, Dover 20
No one is
talking about them but Mount St. Joseph is working hard to continue doing great
things on the gridiron.

St. John's 36, Archbishop Spalding 21

It may be a loss but Archbishop Spalding comes away confident that they have the
horses to play with every single team on their schedule.

VARSITY INSIDER - September 22nd Edition

Maryland Varsity is bringing readers an in-depth recruiting look with the
Varsity Insider. Find out what colleges are after Canaan Gebele, Paul
Padalino, Mark Meynisse, Mike Morris, and Anton Casey now!

......................................................................................................

Whitman tight end Anton Casey

Recruiting:
“Over the summer I committed to Brown University so it has
died down for me. With recruiting overall, nothing is really going on. I am just
going to go to Brown and go from there.”

Others interested:
“Since it
was just an oral commitment, some other schools are still contacting me but it
is definitely not like what it used to be. There is nothing major I’d say.”

Calls:
“Call wise, a coach from Carnegie Mellon and James Madison
called. I talked to the Richmond coach over the summer around the time I
committed.”

Visits:
“I think I’ll visit Brown after my season is over
in November for one of their last games. That is the plan.”

......................................................................................................

Broadneck quarterback Canaan Gebele

Recruiting:
“It has been Bryant, Hillsdale, Stevenson, and Denison.”

Visits:
“I’ve been on the campus of all of those before. For game visits,
I was just at Stevenson for their home game. I’ll be visiting a couple of others
later in the season.”

The Stevenson visit:
“I liked it. The atmosphere
is great and I love the coaches. It is a great school with a good football
program.”

A favorite:
“Right now, I have medium interest in all of
them. I like them all. I want to get around more to the campuses and get a feel
for them. I got to figure it out.”

......................................................................................................

Aberdeen athlete Mark Meynisse

Recruiting:
“I heard from Towson, West Point, Morgan State, Michigan,
Syracuse, Lehigh, and a couple of other schools. West Point has been my biggest
right now. They are showing more interest in me.”

Visit?
“I took a
visit to Towson for a game. I look forward to going to West Point to catch a
game soon.”

A favorite:
“West Point I’d say. I like the programs, the
academics, and everything that they have to offer.”

Offers:
“West
Point has.”

Offer talk:
“Towson.”

A decision timetable:

“Right now, I am waiting to make my college decision. I still need to play out
the football season. I want to be able to talk with my coaches and parents about
it.”

......................................................................................................

Perry Hall running back Mike Morris

Recruiting:
“Number one right now is Towson. They are sending me a lot of
stuff and showing me a lot of interest. I am getting stuff from Division II
colleges like Stony Brook and stuff like that.”

Visits:
“I have a
Towson unofficial coming up on Saturday. I don’t have anything else planned out
yet.”

Offers:
“No, not yet. They are supposed to soon.”

A
favorite:
“I want to go Division I and I like schools like West Virginia and
Maryland.”

......................................................................................................

Landon linebacker Paul Padalino

Recruiting:
“Right now, I am talking to Cornell, Richmond, William and
Mary, Bucknell, Georgetown, and a couple of Division III places with high
academics.”

Visits:
“This past summer I visited all of them. I really
like Georgetown, Richmond, William and Mary, and Bucknell. I also really like
Cornell. Those are the schools that I’ve also talked to the most.”

Recruiting the hardest:
“They are all pretty equal right now. They are on my
radar and I am on their radar.”

Visits:
“Not yet. I am trying to put
that together but I haven't decided where I’ll go yet.”

What stood out to us over the weekend

Damascus 19, Quince Orchard 11
This highly rated team has struggled
at times offensively. It came back to haunt them against a talented 3A foe in
Damascus. The QO defense is talented but the offense must be improved.

Churchill 25, Wootton 14
The Churchill defense stepped up in a big
way during this top ten matchup.

Old Mill 37, Meade 0

A strong Meade team saw everything go against them during the loss.

Roosevelt 42, High Point 0

Roosevelt has given up a total of eighteen
points in three games. They are under the radar.

Mergenthaler
Vo-Tech 18, Douglass 8

Finding a way to win as the score doesn't matter.

Paint Branch 43, Kennedy 7
The ridiculous offensive numbers
continue to pile up, regardless of graduation.
