Fort Hill's scheduling woes are well documented. What may surprise you is that finally after winning 20 plus straight 1/2 A State Championships, Paw Paw Athletic Director Delmer Delawder is finding himself scouring every hill, holler, Dollar General and Ramp Dinner in West Virginia and throughout all of Appalachia to get opponents, nobody wants to play Paw Paw either. Finally, running out of options, Delawder set his disdain for the Fort Hill schedule makers aside and contacted Fort Hill via Buzzchat asking for help. Delawder's disdain stems from being mad because Two Todd's refuse to play Paw Paw as well.
The Buzzchat communication opened up a lunch meeting between Paw Paw and Fort Hill officials at the School House Cafe in Oldtown to determine how the two could help each other find games. The Fort Hill folks piled into Dave Christopher's Fort Hill van and headed down to Oldtown for the meeting. Paw Paw officials floated upstream on Kayaks, coming ashore at the Oldtown Toll Bridge. The meeting was fruitful, not just in terms of the outcome, but literally because there was a bunch of fruit there, a big basket of Paw Paws were picked for the occasion. What wasn't eaten was donated to be turned into Paw Paw Preserves, or perhaps combined with Habeneros to make a Sweet Hot Wing Sauce.
Everything didn't go perfect, there was much disagreement and still a bit of animosity. In the end, agreeing to work together, Fort Hill and Paw Paw agreed to form a 10 team conference consisting entirely of teams with Red in their uniforms, some big, some small, some juggernauts, some horrible, but all wearing Red. The new Conference was named the "Big Red Conference." Just as things looked great, and all 10 teams had been agreed upon, issues of trust crept in when talk of a "Big Red Television Network" came up. There are many, many issues that needed to be worked out, particularly with respect to FCC regulations but in the end things simmered down and talk of football resumed again.
The 10 teams of the Big Red Conference are as follows: Paw Paw Pirates, Fort Hill Sentinels, Bridgeport Indians, Southern Rams, Steubenville Big Red, Parkersburg Big Reds, Red Lion Academy, Cumberland Patriots, Cumberland Cardinals, and Red Hill Auto Clinic All Stars. Each team would play the other 9 league opponents and still be able to retain 1 non-league game. This way Fort Hill can play Allegany, Southern can play Northern, Bridgeport can play Keyser, and Parkersburg can play Parkersburg South as examples. All 10 teams are in agreement and League play begins in 2018. So now, not only are the scheduling woes over for all teams involved, but fans will get to see the game they've been dying to see, Bridgeport versus the Cumberland Patriots, or I mean, Fort Hill versus Paw Paw. No more ducking.
In other exciting news, Burton's Tavern in Paw Paw has agreed to sponsor the Championship and Runner Up Trophies. The Runner Up will be awarded the Burton's Tavern "D Cup," with the Champion awarded the Burton's Tavern "Double D Cup."
