The 2017 season will be the fifth for Andre’ Pope at Avila University. Pope is the Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Backs Coach for Coach Hicks and the Eagles. He has produced 4 All-Conference Defensive Backs.

A graduate of Fort Hill high school in Cumberland, Maryland, Pope was regarded as one of the best high school recruits in the state. He spent time at running back, cornerback and safety and was rated as one of the top 300 recruits in the nation. By Pope’s junior year he received numerous offers from schools such as: Clemson, North Carolina, Penn State, Virginia Tech, Maryland, West Virginia and UCONN.

Pope committed to the University of North Carolina after suffering an ACL tear the 3rd game of his senior year of high school. As a freshman in 2006, Pope ranked 8th in the nation with seven interceptions and 5th in the nation in pass break ups (19). After flirting with a career ending injury (fractured hip), Pope then transferred to West Georgia two years later, completing his final season where he spent time at both safety and outside linebacker. During his time as a Wolf, Pope ranked nationally in forced fumbles and led the team in tackles per snap.

Thank you for this post. I've always wondered what happened to him... This guy was a beast and never got to show what he was fully capable of doing due to injuries...He could've went very far in football.. He was a once in 20 yrs type of talent like a Ty Johnson... Im glad to hear he's still involved in football and I wish him the best of luck...

I still have the MD/DC Preview Magazine with him and 3 others on the cover. That was his Junior year.

I know teammates of his back in 2004 will still tell you they would have won state with a healthy Andre.

Potomac High on that muddy quagmire at Flowers High school would have been a formidable challenge regardless.

the sad thing is I still find myself saying "move dem chains" today. We found their scouting report on Fort Hill walking across the field waaaaay prior to game time. It was on a copied piece of notebook paper. It said "slow running backs" and "quaterback does not like to get hit". What QB likes to get hit? Well duhhhhh......
