In the 80s there were two leagues, right? The Chiefs were heavyweight and Moose was lightweight for the Alllegany teams

There was a lightweight league that started in the late 70s and ran through the 80s. Teams included Outdoor Club, Redskins, Keyser, etc. The weight limit was like 105 lbs. Many smaller 7th and 8th graders were a part of that league. At the time, there was no CAYFL Division II. That Division II came about after the Lightweight League folded. The Lightweight League and the CAYFL were not related to each other. Just different weight classification leagues.

The Pee Wee Leagues had both a weight limit and age limit. I think they were 85 lbs limit and 6th grader limit. Today, there are no significant weight limits. Instead they use Green Striping. If you weigh over 165 lbs in the CAYFL you cannot handle or run with the ball. Those kids get a green stripe on their helmet and have to play the line. But they can play. Back in the old days they could not even wear a uniform if they weighed over 140 lbs. Many of those kids over the CAYFL weight limits played in the Catholic League. I think there were teams for St. Pats, St. Pete's, St. Michaels, St. Mary's. The Catholic League had no weight limits.

The history is off a little regarding Division II. Division II started in 1990 with unofficial games, refereed by the coaches. In 1991 D-2 was official with a season. The first D-2 Championship was held in 1991 at Frankfort High School, directly prior to the D-1 Championship. The VFW Patriots beat the Braddock Warriors 26-6. The Lightweight League was still around for a couple years after D-2 in the CAYFL started, at least up to 1993, as the VFW Patriots went out to the Cresaptown Eagles of that league for a preseason scrimmage. The weight limit of lightweight was up to 135 by that time and heavyweight D-1 was 145, only 10 lbs difference. Cresaptown we found out later had FH players playing in that scrimmage, including a varsity player. I will not name the one player but I joked about this with him decades later as I was the one going up against him as a 12-13 year old linemen. Most people would know him.

Catholic League had no weight limit to play. 135 pound weight limit on handling the ball.

I don’t remember a Catholic league. The Saints had a team in the Lightweight league

Yes, that D2 info is in the history I posted above. In 1990 three JV teams started. But the program I have doesn't expand on D2 until around 1997 when they started handing out a Championship MVP Award. Wasn't sure what year Lightweight started or ended exactly. Also in that that history, 1990 the CAYFL had only four D1 teams - the smallest the league had ever been.

It had been around since I believe the 1940s. When I played in the 70s it was sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. We would have pre season scrimmages against teams from the CAYFL. Teams were St.Marys, St.Petes, St. Pats, St.Mikes of Frostburg, and St.Joes of Midland. There was also a Catholic Basketball League as well.

Very interesting summary...especially seeing the mvp winners who went on to become local "football stars". But I do see many names that disappeared in later years. Any idea if they left the area....just quit playing...went on to "star" elsewhere??
