Hancock Head Coach resigns

Did anyone happen to listen to Hansel’s post homecoming post game interview speaking of opting out of the playoffs? One of the WCBC guys asked him about the rematch with FH and he said that he wanted to ask his team if they wanted to opt out or play the game? He said it would be up to them if they wanted the challenge again. I can’t believe he would even mention opting out. Maybe alco admin needs to reach out to coach hare about possibly taking over the team for the playoffs
I did not hear this, and hopefully for the returning players, his comments were taken out of context. He may be a wonderful person, but I for one would not want my child playing in that environment. Yet many people in this area believe a kid should have to play under that circumstance, because of what side of of a street their parents decided to live on way before they were even born. Antiquated thinking.

I didn’t watch the interview but opting out of the playoffs is not the mindset you need from a leader.

We all know anything can happen in a one game playoff situation. I’m sure everyone on this board can name more than one game where the opponent got beat pretty bad the first time and came back and won the second match..

Very confusing right? On a similar but opposite end of the spectrum. Hats off and much respect for the way Coach Alkire has handled post game interviews...win or lose. He does not bring in politics, reltion, the mpssaa, boe, fans, or any other kind of excuse for his team or coaches. He is very business, very short which probably is a good plan, answers the questions and gets out of there. This is not easy and other coaches have failed to keep emotions out of what doesn't have to be anything other than a fact or two which is what he always does...hats off to him!

BAD REFS

I have made a concentrated effort this season to not complain about officials. and or officiating. What I will say about the ref show is that I can understand a missed call, i.e. a hold, or a block in the back. It happened, but the ref just didn't see it. I can excuse that, watching lots going on and just not seeing it. On the other hand that call on the punt return. If the block never happened, how could you have possibly seen it. Inexcusable. On another note I didn't see what Daniels did to get the unsportsmanlike after his 1st TD. What I did see was the official that was in the back corner of the endzone on Alco side of the field was the only ref to throw a flag. Daniels was outside the numbers near the FH sideline at about the 10 yardline, at least 40-50 maybe 60 yards away. Neither of the 3 officials within 10 yards of him dropped a flag. I wasn't paying that much attention to what Daniels did. I just happened to notice the flag flying through the air. and where the official was when he threw it. Thought it odd that of the 6 the only one who saw or heard something was so far away.
The white hat threw that penalty and he was on the 20ish on the Alco sideline. Definitely far away to make that. Seems like he was chicken hawking on that one.

Your post is very well written and thought out. You are correct, I do enjoy older values. The time when sports had its appropriate place in society and also in our younger peoples lives. I just hope we are not doing long-term harm to these student athletes with some of the lessons we are currently teaching them.

Sports much like society has become much more individualized. Everybody out for their own personal interests. I like the idea of working for the common good of your school, community and team. I enjoyed the loyalty and dedication to your teammates and coaches that we once embraced.

I hope we can cling to very core values of what sports are meant to be for our student athletes. A vehicle to teach them life lessons to increase their chances of becoming better young men and women who go on to make a positive contribution to society. To strive for excellence in all they do and learn the value of having a gritty, competitive spirit on the field and in life.

I just hope the current trends and impending NIL does not ruin what was once one of the greatest things we had in high school sports. Thanks for an insightful and respectful post TD.
Could not have stated that any better.

I heard about this several days ago. The school admin really should be ashamed of themselves the way they went about this - the kids finally had an improved season and wanted to play in the playoffs - and the admin has no confidence in them. Understood that they would be a huge underdog, but no confidence that the players would enjoy the experience.

It should also be stated, that for the last game Coach Hare, as a paying spectator, went to the game to watch from the stands. Quietly, no issues. And the admin went out of their way to locate him in the stands and have him removed from the game. That was so beyond overstepping.

Kudos to the coach for standing up for his players.

FYI, it happens at Alco.

You are trying to cling to old values. I am guilty of the same much too often. Yea, I was one of those red & white dudes not happy about Dunbar pulling kids from all over Baltimore in the name of magnet education tactics as early back as the 1990s. Can't think that way anymore. The world evolved. I can't look Reggie Bush in the eye and tell him he doesn't deserve his Heisman back for taking money decades ago. Felt the same about Pete Rose. There are gambling ads on World Series broadcasts now. I had to grow/adapt mentally. Doesn't mean I like it though.

Now you can throw in paying players to go to other high schools. NIL for teenagers exists in most every state. Just call it what it is -- pay for play. Every dollar spent has attachments for teenagers. Even worse for private schools. There were kids that played for BW basketball that attended 3 different schools in 3 years, coming from places far far away, yet most of Cumberland embraced the concept. I know public schools are different, but are they really? Yea, not as extreme but the transfer portal is alive and well everywhere. So it depends on the lessons society wishes to teach young men and women. Monkey see, monkey do. Kids don't distinguish whether "ME" is public or private.

Even more so for parents who think their kids will get a scholarship if they play here or there to drive their own bus. I don't name names, but there are two dads I know right now that round the clock shop their kid to multiple schools every week to see where the grass might be greener for their boy getting more carries or passes. And if they don't get those carries or passes the threat to go elsewhere is on the table openly.

This is not the world we grew up in. Not even 10 years ago. The less fortunate in this system are going to complain while easily doing the same when possible. Half the FH team could transfer to Alco next season. Does anyone believe Alco coaches would not take them? Everyone is in the same fish bowl now. I know personally local coaches in this county who call kids to see if they are interested in transferring in many sports. It might be worse for girls sports now. Heck, I watch Dapper Dan daddy coaches load up with ringers over the phone.

On the lines of where kids play football in elementary/middle schools... How many kids play for WV teams whose parents all went to Alco or FH but bought a home in WV for tax purposes? Not sure why it's so surprising they end up back in Cumberland schools for high school where their families have lifetime loyalties. I watched all the Robinette brothers play pee wee ball in WV only to move to Virginia Ave in South Cumberland while driving their sons to Alco daily so they could play pigskin. I applaud them for it, they are diehard Allegany parents. How many kids live in Bel Air and play girls/boys sports at Alco and Mtn Ridge? There is no more district restriction. I could go through an entire list of names the past 20 years of kids who lived on the other side of town but played sports out of district. It's not really new, just more widespread.

My advice to any coach: you can either embrace the transfer portal and win games or fight it and lose games. I said the same thing about social media 15 years ago. I embraced the power of social media. It's why I post here and many places. I also made sure my income sources had no control over what I embrace on social media that contradicts their own greedy benefits.

Literally, there are people in high places that have condemned me for being on social media only to have them ask me from time to time to put something on social media to get their side of the story out. It's powerful. Denial isn't just a river in Westernport, LOL.

There is a reason you skim through business ads at every digital media location you dwell. In case some folks were not paying attention, people of all ages stare at cell phones all day. I spent an entire day (as in 10 straight hours) of texting and talking on my cell when this FH eligibility forfeit situation broke. Now who am I to tell teenagers they are starring at their phone too much? It's like reading quotes from Coach Hansel joking that players transfer to FH because the girls are more pretty. I like Coach Hansel, but that does not stop me from saying his reason for poking at the subject is because FH gets them more than he does. Not because they do it and he doesn't. Like me texting my grand kids to tell them they use their cell phones too much.

Look at the replay around the 42:00 minute mark and see 3 jumping up and down, but making some type of hand gesture in front of his facemask...looks like he did it twice. Thought the referee called the penalty as he did not consult with other officials but made the penalty announcement over his microphone. Heard that for sure during the actual game and the replay. Double check me. I might have missed something.
Oh I heard the referee, I didn't see what #3, did or said. I just found it odd that the official so far away interpretated whatever he did was unsportsmanlike, while 3 officials very near saw or heard nothing that justified throwing a flag. The official that threw the flag was the farthest away. It seemed he threw it 25 yards in the air, and the flag was still 25 yards away from 3. I didn't notice him jumping, I thought I saw him grabbing at his own face mask as he was walking to the bench, but wasn't sure if that's what he was doing. My question basically was that if he did something so egregious that an official 50 yards away could see or hear, what were the other 5 officials doing.

Says it was the schools decision, not his, to opt out of the playoffs. End of story also says Smithsburg has opted out.

Back in May and through July, August and September I tried to help Riverdale fill many holes on the schedule. St. Frances was one of them - both their Regional and National teams were begging for games. I was given a "no we are not interested, that does not do our program any good to play either." Which I have no problem with, much respect for Coach Gary. That doesn't make him someone hiding from competition. But according to your definition it does. Let him know yourself he was a coward. Maybe now Coach Gary realized his team has success so he might reconsider St. Frances and that would be great. I think you can beat them or come close. But 100%, Riverdale didn't want that game back in August.

Yet you are hypocritically trying to justify a Class 1A public program for not wanting to play a private school who has no outside eligibility entity to govern them while driving 30 new D1 level players into the program over the span of a month with zero loyalty to any school. Our paths are totally polar. So I get a little testy with your dogging 14-year old replies knocking on FH. If Riverdale and FH played every year since Riverdale football was established, I don't think the record would reflect well for you. Last year FH would have crushed Riverdale. But kudos on adding another team of players this off-season, most of whom are playing for their third high school. Not trying to knock just Riverdale, that's what private schools do. If it makes you feel better, FH would have no shot at beating Riverdale this year. At least I am honest. Not sure why you would even want to play a 1A public school. You need to be playing DeMatha, St. John's, Archbishop Spalding, etc.

Now I am guilty of debating with you, which makes me a hypocrite. Dolp! The weird part you wouldn't believe is that I actually root for Riverdale and keep up with their results every week. If they need a game, I'll help if I can. Check the WVSSAC (West Virginia) open dates board and the Eastern PA open dates board. That is me looking for games for Riverdale. I hope you keep winning. Good luck to you and your son. FYI, FH has the highest winning percentage of any team in the US that has played more than 600 games. Not bad for 7 man football ;)

It’s like comparing RB to one of the perennial National powerhouses that are always elite. There’s always a better team out there. I’d love to see them match up with the likes of Martinsburg. Still local enough.

Kudos to you for helping them out when possible, Todd.

Another IDIOT who has no CLUE... There is no such thing as a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP HS GAME... 🤡 A team is deemed the HS NATIONAL CHAMPIONS based on a vote.... Some people. 😂 SFA plays no extra games

Don’t be too hard on this idiot pick a 1031. He knows that they will never be voted as national champion. The people that do the voting dont even know RB has a football team.. this moron is just a loser that comes on a western Maryland board because he has nothing better to do. His team doesn’t even play a lot of weeks..

I didn’t say SFA played an extra game to win a national championship. They’re goal along with about 30 other teams in the country is to be voted national champs by playing GAMES during the season

What are u 🤡 talking about... Are u saying because we don't play for a state or confrence title our program is some how diminished... We put D1 kids in positions of success EVERY YEAR... SFA doesn't play for a title... Are they ridiculed as well...?? Speaking of. TD you are referring to a conversation with OG back in may.... As I stated. I know for a fact a conversation with SFA has occured since then (last 3 weeks) with the hopes of playing each other this year. RBS is not hiding from competition.... Nor do we use ineligible players... These 2 things can not be said for FH... Facts are Facts.. Its funny that you people compare 7 man football to what we do... 😂 makes me laugh. Its like little league vs Alabama 😂
