Maryland Varsity is bringing readers an in-depth recruiting look with the
Varsity Insider. Find out what colleges are after Andrew Garnett, CJ
Rainey, Cole McDonough, Matthew Hunt, and Jack Pilkerton now!

......................................................................................................

Riverdale Baptist lineman Andrew Garnett

Recruiting
“So far I’ve had one offer from Hampton. I also have interest
from Clemson, Old Dominion, Purdue, Boston College, and Rutgers. All of those
schools want me to come to their camps.”

Visits made
“I went to
Maryland, Old Dominion, and Hampton.”

Plans for visits
“No. I am just
going to focus on workouts and getting better overall.”

Close to offering

“Boston College said that they were close.”

Favorites
“No.”

A
favorite college growing up
“No.”

Wise running back CJ Rainey

Recruiting
“I did a visit with Old Dominion and I get a lot of mail from
them. I’ve been talking to some other coaches but this was my first year of
varsity. I didn’t get that head start.”

Schools
“Monmouth, Missouri is
sending me a lot of mail, and Southern Arkansas are the main ones. Old Dominion
is showing me a lot of love. They got some players from our school there now.”

Distance
“I am trying to stay somewhere within three hours. I don’t want
to go too far. I want to be close enough where my family can come and see me
play.”

Upcoming trips
“I’ll set something up but not right now. I did
have a chance to go to Penn State but I missed that one.”

A favorite
college growing up
“Chris Rainey is my cousin so I love Florida. I lean
towards Florida but in talking with my dad we agree on schools like James
Madison, Towson, and Delaware. I’ll be reaching out to those schools soon.”

Bel Air lineman Cole McDonough

Recruiting
“As of right now, it is still Columbia, Davidson, Stetson,
Butler, Delaware, and Maryland.”

Offers
“All of them have offered
something. Maryland and Delaware have both offered walk-on spots. The others
have offered.”

On walking-on
“I’m not sure because I can still get a
good education and have most of my college paid for. With the preferred walk-on,
it is not guaranteed. I am leaning more towards a school like Columbia that will
pay for most of the way and I could play as a freshman.”

Official visits

“I have an official visit setup with Davidson on January 16th and had one at
Columbia on December 12th.”

The Columbia visit
“It was really good to
see more than just the football side. I got to go inside the classroom and meet
professors. I also got to meet the team and that was quite the experience.”

A final decision
“I wanted to have it all figured out by Christmas but I
couldn’t get the Davidson visit in before then. I’ll know by the end of
January.”

A favorite
“I like Columbia because it is an Ivy League
school but I also really like Davidson.”

La Plata wide receiver Jack Pilkerton

Recruiting
“I receive an offer from Shepherd a few weeks ago. I’m going
down there for an official visit on the 16th. That is my only official visit so
far.”

Others
“The two offers I received during the season were Liberty
and Holy Cross. JMU offered but they filled up those spots. I was trying to
commit but couldn’t get a hold of their coaches. They now want me to walk-on and
earn a scholarship. Towson said the same thing.”

Walking-on vs. a
scholarship
“At JMU, I was really interested because I was trying to commit.
I just couldn’t get a hold of any of them. I had to visit the school to talk to
them and that is when they told me. I would rather take an offer to a smaller
school but who knows if something will come up.”

Officials
“I have the
one with Shepherd but I might try to do like two more. I’m not sure.”

A
favorite
“Not at the moment. I’ll have to go through my options more in-depth
and pick a front runner.”

Recruiting the hardest
“Shepherd is the
hardest but I am also getting looks from Maine, New Hampshire, and Toledo.”

......................................................................................................

St. Mary Ryken lineman Matthew Hunt

Recruiting
“The schools that I’ve been seeing are Rutgers, Boston College,
Morgan State, Old Dominion sends a lot of mail, and then schools like West
Virginia. Those are the schools that send the most.”

Visits
“I
actually went to Penn State two times for a game, Rutgers, and also Old
Dominion.”

His favorite visit
“I would say Penn State because there
were 100,000 people there. The stadium is loud and they pulled out the W. Old
Dominion also really stuck out because a lot of my teammates are committed there
at the moment. They are showing a lot of interest.”

Offers
“I don’t
have any offers at the moment.”

Offer talk
“I think Old Dominion might
be offering but I’m not sure.”
