Sherando having their way tonight...

How do you see Fort Hill matching up to them?
I'm not really qualified to say. I've not seen either team. I've read & heard some preseason prognosis on Sherando, and they're touted in the top 4 in Virginia north 4A. My impression is this is Sherando's best team in 4-5 years. Hamspear on here has much more insight than me on Sherando. From what I read on here about FH's scrimmages the secondary is a concern. If that is accurate they'll have a hard time against Sherando with an experienced QB & WRs... I'm hoping to go this game and expecting it to be very physical and close...

Unless FH is playing Alco I will be there screaming for every tackle they make and every touchdown they score. But I will ask again about this schedule. If one of these larger schools drops a 30 point bomb on them what will the reaction be?

Keep in mind that Clearfield, FH's first opponent, throws the ball 95% of the time. I'm sure they had someone at one or both of FH's scrimmages. And I'm sure the FH staff didn't want to show their hand too much when it comes to coverage's in scrimmages.

Two years ago 2013. , Sherando lost the State championship game , that team played one of the best teams I have ever seen in my life in Dinwiddie. so far that is the best team Sherando has had in the last 5 years. now this team , is pretty good, and could become better, yet to be seen. you guys will match up fine, from what I hear your team is really good.

Have to go back just 3 seasons ago in 2012. FH got drubbed by Keyser to the tune of 29 points and then followed that up with a 38 point beating at the hands of North Hagerstown. I still say that year may have been Todd Appel's greatest coaching job, despite getting bounced in the regional final. Tough schedules don't make you better come playoff time. I find that analogy to be false. Certainly though, you want to know how your kids will respond when they are behind on the scoreboard when the pressure is at a peak, especially late in the game. Every team generally needs punched in the mouth so you can see the reaction. In that regards I understand tough opponents. But losing games is not a beneficial mental builder in most cases.

I don't think I have ever heard so many people afraid of possibly losing... This must be the day and age we're in where everyone gets a participation award.... Give me a team, coaches and fans that welcome a challenge.. I would rather go 0-10 against tough competition than go 10-0 against a cherry picked schedule... But that's just me I guess.

I agree, even winning a state championship may not define the "greatest coaching job", but I'm sure every coach would take the championship in lieu of being "great" :) In correlation to your example, in 2012 Oakton surprised the Virginia North 6A region and won the championship, only to get thumped the next week by eventual state champion L.C. Bird. This was my son's first year as head coach. The following season he moved 14 10th graders and 3 9th graders to varsity to groom them (I still have a program from that year & just counted them) :) Virtually, they were a JV team and took their lumps that year, and sill but less so last year. This year they are ready to surprise a lot of people, IMO, and if they get their starting qb back from a knee injury soon, but to your point, Todd, times when you have to be innovative in various ways is what separates the good coaches from the average ones. Winning is fun, but to me, it's equally fun to see the coach's adjustments and maturation of the team as they grow & move forward. Fort Hill will do just fine. One of the 4 JV players moved up is my relative (#9 Kaleb Harden), so I'm interested see the progress over the next several years.
