Yes. If the ball is kicked in the air the receiving team has to have the opportunity to catch the ball. If the ball is kicked into the ground first and bounces in the air and then it’s live football. If you are referring to the on onside kick in the mountain Ridge Northern football game tonight that was the correct call. The ball was just kick straight in the air off of the tee And not the ground

No,... because you can kick it deep and still if you recover kicking team gets the ball. But, the receiving team can always fair catch the ball if someone onsides the ball and it doesn't hit the ground first.

Rule 6-1-5 ...Any kicking team member may recover a free kick if it has both touched the ground and gone beyond the plane of R's free-kick line. The two requirements may occur in any order.
