It's pretty cool having the both of you on the same board and thread. Ed Forshey is the guru of West Virginia High School Football schedules. Likewise, eagleinsider is the same for Maryland. Seriously, I know of nobody that is as thorough, up-to-date and precise. Both have helped me personally through the years with multiple teams. Thanks to them, many kids have games to play at many different schools. I hope the two of you stay in touch outside of the forum. If not, you can always find their updated schedules for all schools on either the West Virginia TGC forum or the Baltimore Sun forum in the same format.

I don't know of any games for the dates Ed is asking for other than to say Fort Hill is still searching for an Oct. 7 game. We keep getting close and hope something comes through.

Also to our Sherando friends here...I have been notified that Sherando will be moving into a larger district beginning with the 2017 school year making the task of finding games less of a burden. But that also means that FH and Sherando may have to move something around to make another series happen.

FH v Sherando is a fine (or will be) series if it can go on past this current 2 year deal.

Southern Garrett is at Clear Spring on 10/21. Do you know who they're playing on 10/7? I don't have a game for them on that day:
============================
South Garrett is Home vs Clarksburg Notre Dame, WV. on 10/07
CND is a very small Catholic school in Clarksburg, WV

Thanks Ed. I'm 99% sure the missing game for South Hagerstown on 9/23 is at Linganore, I just don't have official schedules from either school yet. Linganore played at SH on the corresponding week last year and I'm still showing both as needing a game that week. All of SH's games I do have were pieced together from opponents schedules.

Ed, thanks for the WV schedules.

I updated the top post to reflect the most up to date info I have. If you didn't read the other thread, Fort Hill is hosting Fairmont Heights on 10/7.

Let me know if you hear who Northern Garrett is playing on 10/28. I've had no luck with that one so far.

I wish I could offer some help with Northern's 10/28 game, I'm not sure what it could be and can't even provide a good guess. There is always the possibility they've picked up a PA school, I can't find anywhere that has PA schedules, seems like they like to be kept top secret, so that is the only thing I could even suggest checking into.

Ed, thanks for the WV schedules.

Also to our Sherando friends here...I have been notified that Sherando will be moving into a larger district beginning with the 2017 school year making the task of finding games less of a burden. But that also means that FH and Sherando may have to move something around to make another series happen.
If that happens, Sherando would have a tougher time filling the schedule. All the closest 5A teams are at least a hour away and some would be almost 2 hours away. I would not count on that happening just yet. New school is being built, and there is a little room at the other county school to adjust attendance zones. It was done before when Millbrook was being built. I am confident it will be done again if possible.

hamspear, I was told direct from the AD that this would benefit Sherando greatly as they won't have to search everywhere for football games. Moving into a larger district that is. Does that mean jumping to Class 5A or just changing districts/regions/conference (whatever that means in VA)?

I have to admit that I'm not up to snuff on how the Virginia alignments are exactly set up. I get the class structure but not the regional structure. I should probably know this, but it's very rare anyone from Maryland plays teams from Virginia unless it's towards the Nova/DC area or Southern MD. It would have been great to be a part of the Winchester area rotation on the Cumberland schedules seeing how close it is. But I get that it can't be. No different from us having a hard time picking up nearby PA schools.

I don't doubt that The AD told you that could be happening, but I know for a fact that they are trying to keep that from happening. It happened just 5 years ago and they changed school zones for a few sections of the county to disperse some of the overflowing Sherando population. Moving up to 5A would put Sherando in 5A conference 14 that currently has 5 teams in it that are all at least a hour drive away over the mountain. At the same time Sherando is surrounded by mostly 4A and a few 3A teams that would love not to have to play the Warriors anymore. All the teams in conference 14 - 5A are surrounded by 20 to 25 5A teams within a half hour radius in Loudoun and fairfax county. I don't see why they would be eager to drive over the mountain , but I have seen crazy things happen. The impact is not felt mostly in the sport of Football, it's all the other sports and the challenges of paying for travel for the smaller sports teams. It could happen if a solution is not figured out, becuase the new high school will not be finished before the re- alignment. I spoke with someone way higher on the chain and above the AD about the situation, but that was over a month ago, maybe you have heard fresher information and You could be right, but I don't see how it will make scheduling easier. For your reference , the conference is below
http://www.vhsl.org/classification.5ANorth
Also, those 5A teams in Loudoun County play regularly there 4A county rivals, that way they save money on travel until the playoffs. Sherando was dropped by all Loudoun County 4A teams for this reason over the past few years. That is why we started playing the WV teams and last year Fort Hill. Sorry , didn't mean to step on your board.

Appreciate the info. Can you clarify...with those 5A North Conferences? How do they determine who makes the playoffs in this structure? I am hoping that it is not set up like we have in Maryland where you have 9 teams in the FH 1A West region but only one team will play FH. Then the top 4 teams in the region make the playoffs. If a state organization is going to set it up as such, they must require that teams in that Conference play each other or it's a complete joke...like the MPSSAA.

In Virginia the VHSL assigns you to a district, and (with rare exceptions) you play all the other teams in your district for football. The teams in the district are not necessarily all in the same class, so if Sherando moved up to 5A they wouldn't necessarily move to a different district, since playing in a district with 5A teams would mean a lot more travel.

Playoff qualifiers are determined a by a point system. VA has a more sensible point system than MD, and losing to good teams doesn't hurt you that badly. A higher percentage of teams make the playoffs in VA than in MD as well--the sections get to decide for themselves how many teams make the playoffs, some take 12 teams and some take 16.

Other big difference is that VA has more small schools and Class 1A has a hard cap of 450 students in grades 9-12, so you don't have the same enrollment level of enrollment disparities as MD Class 1A, which from an outsider's perspective seems to cause a lot of problems.

Northwestern District Looks To Expand
Posted: May 14, 2016

By ROB NIEDZWIECKI

The Winchester Star

WINCHESTER — With an eye on making it easier to schedule events, the Northwestern District is looking to expand from five schools to 13 for the 2017-18 school year.

In the plan — which must be approved by the Virginia High School League before it can go into effect — current Northwestern District schools Handley, James Wood, Millbrook, Sherando and Skyline would be joined by six schools from the Evergreen District and two schools from the Bull Run District.

The Evergreen District schools looking to join the conference include four schools who have left the Northwestern District in the last 12 years — Fauquier (last year, 2004-05), Liberty (2006-07), Brentsville (2008-09) and Kettle Run (2008-09). Culpeper and Manassas Park would also join the league. (Sherando activities coordinator Jason Barbe said he’s heard that the only other Evergreen District school, Eastern View, is looking to join the Battlefield District because Eastern View believes there would be too much travel for them in the new Northwestern.)

Two schools from the Bull Run District would also join the Northwestern — Warren County (last in the Northwestern District in 2008-09) and William Monroe. The Bull Run District would be left with only six teams — Group 2A schools Clarke County, Central, Strasburg, George Mason and Madison County, and Group 1A Rappahannock County.

The new Northwestern District would be almost evenly split between Group 4A schools and Group 3A schools. In addition to the four Winchester-Frederick County schools, the other Group 4A schools are Fauquier, Kettle Run and Liberty.

Barbe said each of the 13 schools sent letters to the VHSL last week to approve this new district — the eight looking to join filed requests to join the league, while the five current members sent letters in support of the plan.

The plan must first be discussed by the VHSL Redistricting and Reclassification Committee before a vote can take place. VHSL communication director Mike McCall said no date has been set for their next meeting, but it should take place sometime this summer. McCall said they’ll have to meet before the Executive Committee meets on Sept. 21.

When the VHSL went to a six-classification format for the 2013-14 school year, it created a conference format that currently serves as the opening level of postseason competition.

The VHSL maintained districts strictly to help with scheduling. Schools aren’t necessarily located close to the same teams in their conference, but for the most part they are located close to the teams in their district.

With the VHSL voting in February to do away with conferences and adopting a format in which regions will serve as the opening level of postseason competition beginning in 2017-18, Barbe said he and other athletic directors who are looking to form this district felt a larger district would make more sense from a scheduling standpoint.

Currently, local ADs have been trying to get conference teams on their schedule for tournament seeding, but they’ll no longer have to concern themselves with that beginning in 2017-18.

“Districts are just a scheduling mechanism now,” Barbe said. “I think if you ask any of the ADs [in the Northwestern District], they’ll tell you a five-team district is too small.

“For football, you’ve got to find six games out of your district. For basketball, you’ve got to find 14. For baseball, softball and volleyball you’ve got to find 12 games.”

Barbe noted that finding schools with room for the Northwestern schools on their schedule has often resulted in the district scheduling more games against each other than they’d like. For example, district baseball and softball teams had to play each other three times each in the first year of the conference system.

And even though district schools only need to find eight games for soccer after scheduling each other twice each, twice in the past three years there’s been instances in which teams have had to play each other three times each. (Because West Virginia schools play soccer in the fall, those schools aren’t an option.) This year, the district created a tournament for the Winchester-Frederick County teams in order to get two more games on the schedule.

Millbrook boys’ soccer coach Keith Kilmer said he’ll be OK with whatever system is put in place for the Northwestern District for the future. But if an expanded conference makes it possible to play a larger variety of teams, he won’t mind it.

“I always accept what our schedule is, but I’d rather not have to play a team three times in one season,” Kilmer said.

Though there a lot of scheduling details that would have to be worked out if a new Northwestern District is approved, Barbe said what would likely happen in the team sports of volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer and tennis is that the Group 4A schools would play each other twice each, and the Group 3A schools would play each other twice each.

Then, in order to fill out the rest of their schedules, the 4A and 3A teams could possibly play against each other. Barbe said he does not think that the new district will require 4A schools to play 3A schools.

Barbe said in order to make this district work, it’s essential that the VHSL grants them schedule flexibility.

For example, in a 13-team district, everyone would not be able to play each other in a 10-game football season. In soccer and tennis (16-contest limitation), if the district set it up where the 4As all played each other twice and all the 3As played each other twice, schools would not be able to play all the teams from the other classification in cross-group scheduling.

Barbe said the ADs in this new district would wait to see if this new district is approved before thinking about scheduling for individual sports like cross country, golf, wrestling, swimming and track.

Barbe said he also doesn’t know if they would figure out a format for determining regular season district champions (which would have no bearing on the postseason anyway) or if the Northwestern all-district teams — which were eliminated this year — would return.

In addition to scheduling, Barbe said this potential new district could benefit teams greatly in terms of regional seeding. (The regional seeding format has yet to be determined.) Beginning in 2017-18, all seven prospective Northwestern 4A schools will compete in the 17-team 4A North Region, and all six 3A schools will compete in the 3A Northeast Region.

While this move might make things easier for the Winchester-Frederick County schools in terms of scheduling, it will make it more difficult for the the Bull Run District schools without having guaranteed games against Warren County and William Monroe.

Clarke County athletic director Casey Childs said he understands why the Northwestern District is trying to expand, because he realizes how hard it can be to fill out schedules.

Childs is dealing with scheduling issues right now in case the Northwestern District’s plan does get approved. Scheduling for football is made particularly difficult for the Bull Run teams because Rappahannock County does not have a football team.

“I still have one more [football] game that I have to schedule [for 2017], but our other five non-district games will all be against schools that are larger than us,” Childs said. “Most of the 2A schools around here are in the [eight-team] Shenandoah District. We’ll just have to figure out some different things with scheduling.”

Teams in the same region playing each other. hahahaha, what a concept.

Honest to god, coaches and ADs in other states do not believe me when I tell them that Fort Hill football is in a region that has 9 teams, where the top 4 teams make the playoffs based on a point system, yet only one of those region schools plays Fort Hill. Does everyone see how hideously embarrassing this Maryland set up is?

And in that point system, Fort Hill gets more points for beating Silver Oak then they do for beating Westminster.

Some people will never get it. Fort Hill didn't invent the system, they just have to live in its stupidity.

Thanks for the info. Solves an issue I've had with MSD's schedule for a while.

MSD's schedule had them playing Capitol Christian on that date, which I've known for months wasn't accurate. I thought they were playing National Christian and got the two confused (both small private schools in Prince George's County that started playing football in 2013) but National Christian had a different game on that date too.
