No. There are 10 sophomores on varsity. If they play in the JV game during the week, they cannot play varsity on the weekend.

Also, FH freshman team won at Hedgesville last night 24-8. None of the 9th graders got moved up in order to keep the numbers balanced. They have a solid defensive lineman who should be on varsity next season (#51). Was unblockable.
Wow. That’s impressive. That sophomore class has got to be very stout. Freshman too.

Allegany moved a few up, I’m not sure if the number. 1 doesn’t play varsity, why not let them get playing experience and develop on the jayvee team rather than stand on the sidelines at a varsity game. I’m sure there is reasoning for it and maybe they will move him down when the couple injured players come back. They put him in against Holidaysburg in the fourth qtr when the game was in hand.

This may be a silly question, but do any of the sophomores on the varsity roster get to play in the game last night against Catoctin?

JV football: Huskies @ Miners

I may dread having to say this. And please, I mean this out of total respect for Northern and Phil Carr. No one has more respect from other coaches in this area than Coach Carr.

However, I was at the Northern D1 youth league game at Greenway on Sunday against the Patriots (64-0 final score). Northern had 15 players grades 6-8. They are the only CAYFL team that does not field a D2 squad. The past few years have been that low in numbers. Unfortunately the scoreboard reflects the difficulties about to come for Northern.

I'm told Phil Carr is close to the end of his tenured football coaching career. I fear the Huskies are going to have an extremely difficult time fielding a varsity football team in 2-3 years. There definitely is not likely going to be a JV team. I believe this season may be their last hoorah in regards to being remotely competitive and I base this on roster size and what I have seen at their lower levels. If you have 15 players through three grades I have no idea how you deal with it. That is where Hancock comes from and it's not easy.

I'm hoping Northern can find a way to reverse the course. Southern is trying. I have nothing but respect for all Garrett County football coaches at all levels. God Bless them for trying to keep football alive. Northern is going to face what Southern had to endure last season and Coach Carr most likely can't be there.

Phil Carr is to Garrett County football what Tom Bosley was to Garrett County basketball. That's a huge compliment to both of those coaches.

Maybe Northern needs the change at the top if for no other reason than change. There seems to be more enthusiasm at Southern with the new coach. Now it may take them 3-4+ years to get back to competitive status, but at least the arrow seems to be pointed up.

Fort Hill vs Dunbar to be featured in Ravens' RISE showdown

As I stated last winter when this Dunbar match up was set, this is a historical event for MPSSAA football. There are only 2 teams that have ever won 4 state titles in a row -- Fort Hill and Urbana. Now Dunbar is on that quest this season as is FH looking to do it again. It's once-in-a-lifetime rare that two teams in this situation would face off against each other. I hope it brings some recognition to this part of the state.

I certainly do not like the fact this is the year FH gets Dunbar based on the experience factor. Lots of sophomores will have to pull their weight and then some to get it done against a pretty experienced Dunbar team. Last year would have been a much better situation. But that's the nature of the beast. These senior backs are going to have to play lights out to help their younger understudies. This is a two year deal. Two great opportunities. Enjoy every moment.

I can’t wait to see it. Dunbar defense looks amazing. It’s going to be interesting

My hope for this game is we come out of it with no injuries, cut down on senseless penalties, and work on the things that will ultimately help win another championship. There are no Dunbars in 1A and losing to them would not mean a whole lot in the big picture.
Perfect description of what the game means this year. Next year however is a game that everyone will have circled. Dunbar finally has to make the 3 hour bus ride into a hostile environment. I can’t wait for next years game especially with it being a week 2 game. The weather should be perfect and the stadium will hopefully see a crowd that rivals Florida a few years back

I was just going to post something very similar. The experience the young guys will get against a quality opponent will be invaluable down the road.
