Dunbar 20 Forest Park 8
Douglass PG 26 Fairmont Heights 20

I am not going to read into these scores too much as I have no clue as to the quality of these teams. But Forest Park from what I saw last year at Greenway seems like they should be taking a 50-0 beating from teams the caliber of Dunbar.

Is Fairmont Heights getting better each year? Douglass had to scratch and claw to come from behind and get that victory. Fairmont Heights is either a far cry from when I saw them play 3 seasons ago or PG County small ball is still on the downside. I think Douglass is legit this season so I don't really know what to make of it.

There was a post on the MOCO board a few weeks ago when Neutral Observer covered the Dunbar-Lewis game. I know he wasn't impressed by Dunbar and said he overheard a coach scouting Dunbar say that this was the worst Poets team he had seen in years.

Fairmont Heights had a nice win over Catholic High (formerly Bishop Sullivan) in Virginia Beach last week. Catholic doesn't have the same volume of talent as when they were trying to build a national program a couple years ago, and they got trounced by McDonogh last night, but they still have some players.

Having watched that Douglass-Fairmont Heights game I would say a combination of things went into that game. First, Fairmont is improving at pretty decent pace from 3 years ago which was helped by the new building and the balance schedule the county had the last couple of years that gave the program momentum. Secondly, I would say that they pretty much had the wind behind them emotionally so to speak as they had probably the biggest home crowd behind them that they’ve probably had in decades plus the excitement of having the local ABC affiliate at the game and they probably played a little above themselves. Douglass for their part seemed like they had a bit of a emotional letdown after they had another heavily emotional game the week before with Potomac. The game went back and forth with Douglass not really doing a lot to open things up it seemed until Fairmont scored to take the lead with the two point conversion at 20-18 in the 4th quarter. After that Douglass opened up the playbook and it was impressive how quickly and easily they scored to take the lead with a minute or two left which was followed by what had to be a dishearteningly immediate start for the exits from the Fairmont stands (to be fair though the stadium doesn’t have a scoreboard). Going into the year I thought Fairmont was probably the 2nd best team in their region behind Gwynn Park and in the top 5-7 1A teams in the state. Next week Fairmont goes to Gwynn Park and that will be a good barometer of where they are as they won’t have the same emotion behind them. As far as the playoffs go for Fairmont Heights even if they lose next week they’ll be a tough out for most teams but I would question them on the road going west or north and wouldn’t match up well with Fort Hill. Gwynn Park is similar but probably a worse matchup for 1A teams in the playoffs. They have a really young team with a sophomore QB but by November I would think they’ll also be a tough out and would take them in a game at Dunbar. As far as playing Fort Hill, I would think of them like last year’s Douglass team but much more comfortable and willing to put the ball in the air offensively.

Thanks ultrawalt. Great input for people in the West who are not able to follow PG ball as much. Please come back and keep us in the loop better. All I have to go by is scores, which never really tells the full story.

Prep QB Collin Johnson did not play in the 2nd half, I was in and out of the car the whole game, I do not know if he was injured.

If FH should beat Dunbar this year, this will be people's reason as to why. The seed has already been planted.
