Has anyone else noticed the marked improvement in overall sports at both of the Garrett County schools? I know there are sports that they have been pretty good in for a long time... Wrestling (both) Girls Basketball (Southern), but it seems that they are getting good in almost every sport now. They dominated the fall and winter sports seasons (minus Fort Hill in football) and have gotten off to great starts in the spring ones as well. They both dominated two Allegany County schools in baseball today. Is this a cyclical thing or something more?

They have both been strong in baseball for a while with the exception of a few down years. I believe it's a testament to the coaches as the kids buy in,across the board with almost all of their programs. they usually aren't the most talented groups or most athletic but they are truly TEAMS not just a collection of players.

Yeah no doubt. And I know both have had strong baseball and softball programs at times. But it just seems as if they are hitting on every level at every sport now-a-days. Even in football. Both have been decent. Also, I can't remember a year, or for that matter, a string of years like the past two that they have been good in almost every sport, fall through spring like they have been.

Good points. A school I see coming up in sports is Petersburg, WV. They have some good youth programs and the town seems to be involved.

They may be doing okay in some sports but softball is not one of them. Southern had a great run quite a few years ago but both have been down for a few years in softball

Petersburg plays Allegany and FH in softball this weekend. They aren’t up in sports yet, but they will be in a few years

Petersburg has a good softball program. They play Allegany this weekend and then again later in the year. If you are a softball fan both games should be fun to watch

The answer is that it is really a combination of things. It is cyclical as this graduating class for the Rams had a nice group of athletes that excelled at multiple sports. While the junior class has some also, they do not have the numbers but will be strong next year in basketball as well. The Huskies have a nice soph class this year which will do well the next few years. As has always been the case with GC athletics, their success is predicated on numbers and this large class is graduating so I see a waning over the next few years until another sizeable athletic class rolls through. What keeps these shifts from usually being so colossal is the strength of established coaching ( Phil Carr at NHS being one of the best in the area I believe) and the incredible community support that all these programs receive. Be it a seasonal game or a championship, no one travels like the Ram fans..
