I have heard many football stories in the rain, snow and mud before but never heard this one...
South Hagerstown defeated Hedgesville in varsity football this weekend 38-33. The game was called in Hedgesville because of lightening with 49 seconds left in the game and South trailing 33-32. They finished the last 49 seconds of the game winning drive the next day.
From the Hagerstown Herald:
The game-winning touchdown drive covered 80 yards in just 1:18, even though it took more than 13 hours to accomplish.
With South down 33-32, the march began Friday night in the pouring rain and with lightning dangerously close. Senior QB Timmy Townsend gave South hope as he threw a 32-yard strike to junior Larry Barnes (five receptions, 106 yards). After Sanon (15 carries, 147 yards) carried for 6 yards to the Hedgesville 42, officials called the coaches together and instructed the teams to take shelter in the locker room.
As the storm continued, the schools decided to resume the game at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
The Rebels gathered at South at 8 a.m. equipped with a plan to go 42 yards in 49 seconds. They did.
