Gage Shaffer suspended for remainder of season

That probably tells you they didn't think he was ready. Most high school QBs that don't come from bigger high schools will probably be red-shirted unless they come in the spring.

Thought he was red shirted? And he broke student athlete code of conduct policy.. I don't believe that has anything to do with him being ready or size of high school he attended? You did read same article as me ? Why post something that has nothing to do with the suspension?

The article says Shaffer, a 6-foot-7 signal caller from West Virginia, hasn't played a snap all season and was expected to redshirt. I thought you had to redshirt before the season begins???

My comment wasn't about the article itself, it was about the previous comment why he hasn't played this season. But you are correct, size of the high school isn't important. I was trying to say fresh QB's that don't run complex offenses in high school, or play against top notch prep talent, usually have a difficult adjustment to big time college football. I have noticed, and have been told by several colleges coaches, that freshman that come in early have a head start when fall practice begins.

I said "redshirt" because it's a common term but the NCAA doesn't really use it. Players have 5 years on scholarship but only 4 years of actually playing eligibility. If Shaffer hasn't played any games he will still have 4 years of eligibility left.

ok I was wondering how that works...

You can retroactively redshirt a player. As long as they don't play (I think a certain percentage of snaps) it can be done at the end of the season. Sometimes even years later, but that might be for medical reasons only.

If that's how it works, I wonder if the Terps will redshirt Ty Johnson? I think he would qualify by not getting enough snaps.

I think if you play less than 10% of the snaps you can apply for a regular redshirt and 20% to apply for a medical redshirt. I'm not total sure and I don't have the motivation to research it any further, lol. Todd H will most likely know.

Ty probably has to many snaps already get redshirted, and with the loss of another RB last week, Ty is the primary back up and should get a lot of carries for the remaining games.
