It's interesting watching FH fans worry if the 35 point mercy rule clock is not in effect against all other underdog opponents. Of which FH was only up by 28 on the road pounding the fullback in the 1,2,3 and 4 hole. I get it, the expectations are what they are.
I was talking to the WTBO crew with Mark Manges in Hagerstown's DoNut Alley after the game (at Krumpe's DoNuts late night where the 30 minute wait in line is worth it). We both were making light of the FH mindset during their warm ups. Whoa, they were about as disinterested as any time we have seen. Watching Smithsburg take an hour to get through the Senior Night pregame was brutal. I think every senior got mentioned with a story about each one. Game started late because of it. FH kids laying down after warm ups under the goalpost yawning. Like Kindergarden nap time. It was weird.
Extend some credit to Smithsburg. They came to play after blanking Clear Spring last week. They had a pretty full stands and their student section in all pink was in full rowdy mode all night along side the band. Pretty cool to see the students have a good time like that. Wish Cumberland students had a section they all sat in next to the band. Talking to some Smithsburg fans before the game, many were there to see FH in person based on reputation. They all wanted a peek at the ultimate measuring stick. First time FH has ever played there.
Of note, this was the first time FH has played on real grass since the Catoctin beat down of 2019. Now it's been a while since I walked on a real grass field but damn that thing needed mowed. It was super thick, couldn't even see players below the ankle. When I walked across it my shoes were soaked from the evening dew. The humor side of me wants to say it was not mowed on purpose, LOL.
FH still has some starters missing (I counted four). One out on quarantine, another just coming off it, one out from last week ejection. Would be nice to see them get back to full strength in time for the playoff run. Likely having two of the next three weeks off with a bye might be beneficial unless an new opponent arises this week due to cancellations.
This will likely sound conceited despite being the truth...Fort Hill is every team's Super Bowl. At least with the local teams. Mountain Ridge coach was even quoted by the newspaper saying the same in the COVID spring game. Take it as a compliment.
