The issue wasn't recruiting, the issue was the transfers and the fact that there were so many available players.
The issue with that is that in 1A, so many teams have to play ironman football - two way starters both sides of the ball. Part of the reason that FH has been able to play so well the last few years is in no small part due to the ability to play the D line with fresh bodies. The O and D lines are able to stay fresher for the whole game. Believe me, that's HUGE in 1A football. FH is lucky to currently have that ability.
Toe to toe, 11 vs 11, FH was even with Dunbar - the difference was the ability to sub in and out replacements and fresh bodies for Dunbar due to deeper talent. If FH had been able to platoon in a fresh defensive line for the final drive in 2008, the outcome of that game could've been different. Dunbar also has far superior coaching than most other city schools, it was a perfect mix.
Flash forward to 2A and not all schools are required to play as much Ironman football. (That's how Middletown was able to dominate, they had fresh linemen). It evens the playing field out. Dunbar should still be considered one of the better teams in 2A most years. But it won't be quite as easy as 1A due to teams having deeper benches.
