The late Jack Gilmore, teacher, coach and athletic director for 27 years at Allegany High School, and the school's winningest football coach will be honored by Allegany this season and at the Campers' season opener against Dunbar Friday night at Greenway Avenue Stadium. The Campers will honor Gilmore, who died June 19, by wearing his initials, JBG, on their helmets this season. Friday at the game, Allegany will remember and honor Coach Gilmore by collecting funds for his charity of choice - the Bagman Backpack Program. The Gilmore family in turn will match all donations up to $1,000.
The Bagman Backpack Program began in Jan. 2008 at two area schools and is currently in 11 elementary schools and one middle school.
WMFB agencies obtain food from the Western Maryland Food Bank and volunteers fill backpacks and then deliver them to the schools on Fridays. The school distributes the backpacks, then collects the empty backpacks early the following week. A volunteer from the agency then picks up the empty backpacks and the process continues.
More than 290 backpacks go out each week.
