MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — In a change to previous policy, football teams from orange and red counties will be included in the playoff fields for the upcoming WVSSAC postseason tournaments.

The WVSSAC has announced that the top sixteen teams in the playoff ratings at the close of regular season play Friday evening will be entered into the brackets. Previously, it was announced that teams from orange and red counties on the state’s COVID metrics map would be excluded and the brackets would be backfilled with teams starting at No. 17 and so on.

To be clear to play however, counties must enter the green, yellow or gold category before game time. To accommodate teams that may still be in an orange or red county on this week’s Saturday 5 p.m. map release, a Sunday option has been introduced. Sunday games would kickoff at 1:30 p.m. If a team’s home county is still unable to enter a green, yellow or gold category, they will be forfeited and their opponent will receive automatic entry into the next round.

On Friday’s daily COVID map, seven of the top sixteen teams in Class AAA would be ineligible under the previous policy.

These are all unofficial.
If Sherman-River View is played tomorrow a few things may change.

This is a bad joke. COVID to determine who advances. OMG. Just drop the playoffs and extend the regular season to 1st week of December.

Yeah, I don't understand trying to have playoffs one bit. Look at the differences in the amount of games some of the teams have played. The bracket is going to look like

Unfortunately the playoffs come at a time when Co-Vid cases are on the rise in many places throughout the state. The WVSSAC is trying to accommodate the teams in the counties that are not permitted to play but it may not work.

I was hoping that they would postpone the playoffs for now, let things settle and pick it back up in early spring when hopefully things may be better. Give them a 2-3 week conditioning/practice period and move into the playoffs come mid-late March. Playoffs would wrap up around mid-late April and then you could start spring sports and extend their season until late June. If you look at spring sports in this part of the country our March and April weather is not always conducive to baseball, softball, tennis and track. However, it would be fine for Football. Just a thought to give everyone a shot at finishing a season.

This is a hundred times better than what Maryland has though, I mean many of these teams actually got to play games and why punish the ones that could play just because of the few that couldn't?
They are at least going to Have State Champions, here in Maryland we have 3 Counties playing for NOTHING...
I mean if you're not playing for a State Title, why even play?
