RIP Darnell Powell. He saved homecoming with a tackle people still talk about.
damn RIP. Hate to hear that.
both his boys had big Homecoming games as well
Yea I share that thought. RIP "D Light" as he called himself back in the day.
Oddly enough Fort Hill lost another former player/graduate in the past few months from that 1985 football team in Rich Boyd as he too lost his bout with cancer. He played split end along with Darnell. Both of them used to shuffle the plays in and out of the huddle. Weird timing to say the least.
But I don't think Darnell was the homecoming saving tackle person. Maybe I'm wrong and please correct me if I am. The tackle I'm thinking of was Kevin Holderby running down Jessie from behind with a shoe string tackle to save a game winning touchdown. That was my senior year when Darnell was a junior. Alco beat FH the next season.
And the 2 seasons after that FH battered the blue by a combined score of 44-8. The 8 by the campers was scored on the second team D on a long pass at the end of the game.
Highly relevant point. Good stuff.
