In reality, when one looks at MD basketball records during the early days this question has to be asked: How many schools outside of Allegany County actually played basketball? The reason I bring up the question is because between 1927 - 1954, Allegany County schools won a total of 25 state championships.
Allegany led the way with 11; Penn Avenue/Fort Hill had 7; Bruce had 4; Central Lonaconing had 2; and Beall had one. (There is also a school by the name of "Barton" that had 3 state championships. I don't know if it was the "Barton" located in Allegany County.)
A major historical event occurred in 1954 that potentially changed everything - Brown vs. the Board of Education - otherwise, known as the desegregation in public schools. When you couple this landmark decision with Allegany County's declining population over the years, well...you can see the results that follow.
Since 1955, Allegany County schools have won a total of 9 state championships in basketball, and Valley High School can lay claim to five of those ('56, '57 '59, '79, '81). Allegany has two ('63, '93). Bruce has one ('61), and Mount Savage has one '67).

In closing, Allegany High School is currently the best basketball program in Allegany County, but as FHHSAHS stated, they have only won one state championship in the past 50 years, and that was 21 years ago.
