While nothing is certain, I am hearing that Coach Appel is leaning towards stepping away. If that is to happen. Who would be likely to takeover?

I heard Paw Paw's Coach Delawder is near the top of the list!! His son is ready to take over the Paw Paw dynasty.

That would be sad to see. But he has done a fantastic job there and nothing wrong with going out on top.

We will have this talk again in 5yrs. There is way too much talent coming up for him to walk away.

I've said this before, but I dont really think the talent matters all that much to him

I would agree on that reply. I am sure that he has many factors he is weighing other than talent that will influence his decision. He and his staff have done an excellent job during his tenure.

Do you guys read fake news much? I believe that we will have him for at least two more years. (then he is looking at a 30 year retirement.)

He could stay and I'd be glad if he did, but I've just been hearing from those close that he is leaning towards stepping away

I have heard the same.......... I don't blame him at all, it's a lot of time to give up from your Family and the pay is almost nothing to Coach High School in Allegany County

Wait a minute, it comes to about 15 cents an hour, but then again, Todd does put in a few more hours than most.

has anybody beyond high school ever came calling?
I don't know that, I do know that many other Counties and States pay much better in Allegany County The pay is $2,500 a Year which is horrible especially when it's year around at Fort Hill.

The head coaching stipend is terrible and while I am not sure about Allegany, in Frederick, the assistant coaches get nothing at all. I am an assistant for another sport, take time off of work (I don't work for the school system) and miss countless hours of family time and get nothing. Luckily, our head coach throws a little something our way at the end of the season but that comes directly out of our sports budget. I cant fault any coach for looking elsewhere or stepping away completely.

Pretty sure the school can add to that as well, not that the amount will make much of a difference either.

Coaching pay is an interesting topic ro discuss. Without a doubt high school coaches are underpaid and all of the major sports and some of the other sports require a year round commitment if your program is going to be competitive.

At one time there were many teachers who also coached but you see much less of that happening now. I think it is a combination of the amount of time required and the lack of pay. The hours are long, you give up some or most of your summer if your coaching a fall sport and you sacrifice time over the holidays if your coaching a winter sport.

In addition to those factors you're dealing with a small number of parents and fans who are never satisfied and are only looking after their own son or daughters interest. It's a tough job that everyone thinks they know how to do but only a few have actually done it.

The good ones do it not for the money or for self-adulation but for the chance to impact their players lives and serve their communities. Winning and losing is a priority but also teaching their players life lessons that will make them better members of society and help them navigate though adversity and persevere is the ultimate goal.

I've heard that he isn't leaving any time soon. I think he ultimately wants to be a principal and he would leave if that opportunity would occur. From what I understand he's drawing a teacher salary and he only teaches a couple of gym classes and then does football stuff the rest of the day. Not a bad gig actually. I think the speculation he was leaving was based on the Frostburg HC job opening up, which doesn't seem likely any time in the near future.

In trying to raise teacher's salaries in my county they published other counties that pay better. Despite being one of the poorer counties in the state, Allegany county teachers have managed to secure a higher pay bracket than most of the other counties in the state. If you are a long time teacher in Allegany county you are one of the better wage earners in the entire county.

The pay scale is all messed up. The starting pay is too low, but Lags is right, teachers that have been there 20 or more years are making really good money for working less than 200 days a year.

I have a relative who was making $10,000 a year while waiting on a teaching job...as soon as he got it he started out at $42K, guaranteed raises took it to almost $50K after one year. That is dam good money in Cumberland MD so is I'm wondering if that is what you mean by low?

Damn, it has been a few years since I saw the starting salaries. The last I remember, it started in the high 20s. Not mid 40s. And the board goes to the county asking for more money each and every year.

I do remember Allegany was on par with Balt/Mont/PG counties. Consider too, that teachers receive a pension and 'golden' medical which have virtually disappeared in the private sector. It used to be that teachers made way less that the average factory worker but then were compensated with an excellent pension and medical. Now, teacher pay has risen so that the average starting salary + benefits exceeds sixty grand a year in almost every county in MD. Considering the states' test scores, we citizens are getting royally ripped off to say the least.

Funny how teachers constantly protest for higher pay with signs that say things like "Support Education" and "Students deserve the Best".... or some such. They get the money and the test scores plummet.

In Allegany County they got their 'steps' as they call it. Other counties did not always approve them in their budget.

Read an interesting story in the wall street journal not too long ago that said it takes on average 11 full time salaried non-public union taxpayers to pay one full time teachers salary when you factor in salary and benefits. That might explain things a little when you hear there are unfunded pension liabilities all over the country in excess of billions of dollars. Those numbers are so crazy it doesn't really compute to an average tax payer. It is something to think about when you see teachers striking and protesting they aren't getting enough.

I just want our young folks sufficiently educated so they can take care of Keith Richards and Willie Nelson once we all pass away.
