A sports heads up...

Garrett County has approved by a vote of 3-2 new field turfs for both Northern and Southern High Schools. The construction will begin this month (May) and will be completed in time for the fall sports season (assuming there is one).

Northern will replace the grass with turf at their current stadium.

Southern however, is moving the new turf field to an adjacent location by the school, not where the current stadium exists. So Southern will have a new turf field to play on this fall but will have no lights, no bleachers, no score board and no locker rooms. Those will be built with private funding at a later date. Southern informed all schools that football games will now be played Saturday at 1:00 and soccer games during the week at 4:00 due to the absence of lights. Again, this is if we even have fall sports.

Some other ramblings...if there is a fall sports season, don't be surprised if local schools wind up playing each other twice (Allegany, Fort Hill, Mountain Ridge, Northern, Southern). Even if sports is given an OK on whatever timely basis, it will likely be a county by county and school by school issue. Many do not foresee teams from Baltimore and DC and other counties/states making trips and vice-versa. Every county and every state is likely to be different. In other words, it would not be surprising to see West Virginia have fall sports while Maryland does not.

Obviously more questions than can be answered at this time due to the COV-19 situation. But there has been some discussion in the event of.

Here's a picture of what Northern's field will look like courtesy of the Northern Garrett Athletic Boosters Facebook page. Definitely a nice upgrade for both schools.

Just a thought but could the Alco/Garrett schools petition to join the WVSSAC on a temporary basis? It's not unheard of as there are Cali public schools in the NV state league for example. Given the lack of cases in Western MD I'd be surprised to see them not in school in the fall.

Given the timeline most other states are operating on mid-July is probably when you need to make a decision on fall sports. Georgia announced its reopening plan for HS sports earlier this week and it would see practices resuming July 6th, but they also start regular season play 2 weeks earlier than MD and have padded spring ball that they lost.

CORRECTION TO MY OP (ORIGINAL POST)
Southern will have bleachers and a scoreboard at the new field. Just no lights or locker rooms yet.

No OUT of State schools cant join the WVSSAC
Its in the BY Laws must be a school within WV borders
