The North/South game is being moved to the beginning of the season this year:

Why not move the FH/Alco game to the first week. The build up would still be fun and give people something to look forward to, especially if the game falls on Labor Day Saturday. The regular (first weekend in November) homecoming week you can play a double header at Greenway, with games at 12:00 pm and 3:00 pm. Imagine Alco/Keyser and FH/MR on the same day? Or if you want to guarantee a win they could both schedule easy games that day. Then most years FH/Alco are going to meet again in the playoffs any way.

I have suggested this in a previous post of mine. Alco would be at its healthiest, given its smallish squad. Currently, Allegany plays homecoming with some banged up players and then its all magnified if they have to face FH again in the playoffs. After all, will folks still beer-up if it becomes a forfeit because Allegany can't field a team by the end of the season?

Agree, great thread boys! And agree with Lag. With small numbers, you are usually healthy starting out the season. My opinion would be a closer and better contest. Allegany played Dunbar week 1, 2 years ago and played tough and came out with the win. Would be very interesting if this would happen. I think it would be a closer contest! Just my opinion

I personally never liked opening with your rival. But then again I don't care for playing your rival last if you can also face them again a week or 2 later in the playoffs. Alco and FH homecoming would be perfect where it is if not for the playoffs.

Very true if not for playoffs.Has always seemed to me when they play back to back or in regional championship it just seems like another game, the game doesn’t have the same passion or hype like homecoming does. I played in early 90’s so we never had the back to back deal , so maybe current players think playing back to back is like having a second Homecoming and the hype is still there.

Most school's don't even have a set homecoming, they rotate and matter of fact in most area's of Maryland schools wouldn't care when they see each other; rival or otherwise.

My circle told me those Hagerstown boys ain't none too happy about moving to Week 1 but ya'll out that way need to get thirsty for it like they do in charm city.

On thing this board doesn't really discuss much is finances. The cost of travel for all sports boys and girls is well over $50K per year for most high schools. Decisions HAVE TO BE MADE taking this into account.

Alco vs. FH as a Homecoming setting is extremely crucial to athletic budgets. Whether they move the game to another date or not is OK, but I think it absolutely should stay as the Homecoming game for both schools.

If an administrator isn't looking at the money side when making scheduling decisions, they are going to fail.

Maybe I’m missing your point but wouldn’t the gate receipts be the same if the game was played the first week? In recent years the game loses a little bit of luster when Alco already has several losses. I think the Alco fan base would be more enthusiastic early in the season.

I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say. I meant make sure it is Homecoming for both schools. The date doesn't matter. And I think you are right in that the interest might even be greater if the game was earlier.

Dumb question, but I'm wondering

Does Fort Hill and Allegany both crown Homecoming Queens at the game

I personally know a NHHS player who seemed disappointed about the game being moved to week 1. Bragging rights and the Hub City Championship will be decided at the start of the season as opposed to the grand finale. NHHS has been struggling but they knock off their rival every once in a while. The pinnacle of their season may happen in week 1, which is a letdown.

Linemanwingames has a good point. If Allegany is having a bad year, they still have something to play for which is FH.
