Man we need a Sentinel...

May as well. Everyone else uses the field.
they should use it for free, the taxpayers pay for it. although the field is not kept up the way it's supposed to be. In Altoona they put the pellets of old tires on the field every week with a machine after using the machine to clean up the old pellets, never seen this done once in Cumberland on the old turf or the new. Same thing that happened at Beall they pay people to do nothing and not take care of things.

It was done at Greenway Ave the first year the turf was put down. But the expense of the machine was too much for the County and Board of Ed to continue.

The machine is at Mt Ridge I hear. My opinion was it is nearing its lifespan. Is tax payers going to replace it? Is there a kitty?

Does anyone remember when alco had there indian mascot ride a horse on the field at Greenway???

Didn't FH have a "Sentinel" with a rifle at games years ago. In my years we had a "Snoopy" mascot on the sidelines.

Yes they did. Back around 89. One of the Hutson brothers from Bowman's Addition played the part I think.

you don't buy turf twice and not have a machine for upkeep on it.
They can save the money once the finally decide they can't build an Allegany and they have to consolidate once and for all.

They will build a new Allegany. Not a matter of if but when. The County has no choice. But as I have said many, many times - that doesn't mean we won't see consolidation at some point. What it means is that we need to shut down the old Allegany, Braddock and Washington Jr. High Schools. They are all health hazzards.

THERE ARE ONLY FOUR SCHOOLS IN THE ENTIRE STATE THAT STILL BURN COAL AS A HEAT SOURCE, AND THEY ALL ARE IN CUMBERLAND (FH, Alco, Washington and Braddock). That is completely insane.

A new school building has absolutely nothing to do with consolidation. Nothing. It has to do with old buildings that contain mold and poor structures where there is no option but to build a new one.

Two things will happen after the new school is built on Haystack. They will either combine FH and Allegany and stick them on Greenway Avenue - then they will combine both middle schools and put them on Haystack.

Or they will combine Braddock and Allegany on Haystack - Washington and Fort Hill on Greenway. The middle schools won't last much longer. These buildings are defunct as well with no money to fix them or build another one.

It makes absolutely no sense to me to have two very small high schools - that are going to keep getting smaller. I for one would hate to see the rivalry end; but .... Another thought - if scheduling is tough now, what is it going to be like when a combined school moves up in to 2A or 3A?

Can FH hold 2 schools???

It may be easier because opponents will get 7.0 for a potential win.

Fort Hill could hold probably 500 more kids. When it opened its doors she held1700 kids including 7th and 8th grades. I do know they took some classrooms out when they put in the cafeteria iyears ago. They don't use the classrooms on the third floor much. Most classes have 10-15 kids it compared to 20 to 30 when I went to school in the early 70's. We where 3a.

Can FH hold 2 schools???

Yes. FH used to hold over 2200 students at one point 50 years ago grades 7-12. My understanding, in a nutshell, is that they would have to dump money into FH to get it up to speed to accommodate that many kids again. It's still an old coal burning building built in 1936. And it will actually cost the county more to reformat FH for consolidation then it will to build a new school. Because the state doesn't kick in funding for remodeling an old school like FH. Lots of people just don't understand the basics. Again, to consolidate FH and Alco into Greenway Avenue will require construction that the state will not pay for. The bill to the county is larger or roughly equivalent to what the local cost is to build a new school.

The main focus is on getting the new building on Haystack done. After that is built then they will have to look at what to do with the middle schools. I will repeat again, the middle schools are not going to last much longer. Those buildings are extinct as well and literally falling down. At some point, much sooner than later, something will have to give.

Some of the local population is still focused on what this means for athletics, rivalries and traditions. Don't...has nothing to do with that, nor should it.

Some of the local population is still focused on consolidation. Don't...this is strictly about having a new building. That part the BOE and County has already decided MUST take place with or without consolidation. And that is the right decision for kids because Allegany, Braddock and Washington are death traps.

We have Mountain Ridge, the next one will be Valley View...School colors orange & purple!

Well, maybe not!

R,W & B for the colors....Fort Cumberland HS Pioneers or maybe Campers. Historical name...keeps alumni of old schools happy.

I think that both proposals make sense that TDHelmick came up with. I really like the idea of having Braddock/Alco at Haystack and Washington/Fort Hill at Greenway. Going to Beall when it was 7-12 was different and I liked it a lot. I think that the other idea makes sense as well. I think the point that @glamourbyjim makes is also a valid one. Being the only 3A school West of Hagerstown would make it very difficult to schedule for football. If this happens would schools such as Hedgesville, Washington, Springs Mills, Jefferson, and Hampshire schedule whatever the new school would be called. It would also become increasingly difficult to make the playoffs most years if the "new school" were to be in the 3A West. Take this year as an example, the fourth place team in that region is 7-1 Oakdale. That particular region is loaded with schools that have good football programs. Not saying that a "3A" Cumberland Football school would be bad at football. I think that the rest of the State do not like the thought of a football program combined between Fort Hill and Allegany. I mean Fort Hill killed a team from that very region two weeks ago. Just wonder what the right choice is.

Tax payers pay for military bases and schools. We aren't allowed on them anytime we want. The field was for organized high school sports. Not a playground for children.

The machine for the field is it called a groomer
it comes free with most turf installed,

Only cost would be fuel and man hours to run the machine once a week.
takes about 3 hours to do the entire 120 yard field.

You go sideline to sideline without turning the machine around.
We have 3 stadium committee members and 2 school janitors that know how to run machine for grooming.
Parkersburg High in Parkersburg, WV has one and it gets used every Thursday afternoon, its recommended to be groomed 24 hours before a football game is played to allow the rubber pellets to resettle after the grooming.

Our current turf is about 8 years old and still looks almost new today.

Glad to see someone else make sense of the whole school issue in our town. Maybe some more people will come around since they are reading and hearing this from you? The feeling that I and many others get is that some people just don't want Allegany to get the new building. That's sad! It should be what is best for the children.
