Keysers first game was postponed due to Covid, not off to a good start. One of the teams didn’t have enough practices

Also, Silver Oak not fielding a team this year - Alco's first opponent.

I told the FH coaches not to worry about their Week 8 opening back in January. Just worry about playing the games you have. Today (Aug 24) is an important MPSSAA meeting. They will decide whether or not to waive the COMAR rule where teams cannot add or drop an opponent after playing their first game. They waived it last year due to COVID. They will need to do the same for 2021. I almost had my Quad cancelled Saturday because of one positive test. It's going to be chaos again.

Lots of skill position talent. Stubbs, Willis, White all worthy D1 prospects with the first two already offered. With a good senior year White could be a great FCS level player. He caught my eye big time at the Quad - an explosive fullback with both size and a burst of speed. Which I cannot remember the last time FH had 3 D1 talents on the same squad. Four if you count the sophomore tackle Hess (he is gonna be a great one). Speed is abundant in the backfield. Two really good QBs to pick from. I think the junior Bender is like 6'4 and Schadt has a live arm. The OL is the huge question mark, gonna take some development. Could see 2-3 nice sized sophomores possibly getting prime playing time there before the year is over. Hess already a starting tackle, he was a starter as a frosh last spring. But this is the area to watch...a long way to go. Not a big football team in terms of size across the board. At least not with veterans.

This new offense (which you could see last spring) is still wing-T based but a lot more shot gun and other variants. It won't be pass heavy, but they will toss it when you don't expect it much more than what they had under Coach Appel. It's important to note that FH is still in possession of their normal ground and pound wing-T stuff. In fact, at the Quad the first opponent for FH was St. Frances Varsity (they go by National and Varsity). St. Frances got off the bus and I texted our coaches jokingly to tell them they were in trouble. Some real physical specimens they possess. FH decided to go strictly old-school wing-T against them for good reason. They ended up playing pretty even and St. Frances had big trouble stopping that offense. FH was even able to score on like a 30 yard TD pass against them. The funny quote of the day was after FH got done that first Quad rotation and the St. Frances coach came out to me on the field and said, "Please tell me the next team we play doesn't run that freaking wing-T"

So for those that consider Cumberland schools need to adapt to more spread like the rest of the world I would disagree big time. The city kids rarely ever see it and don't always know how to handle it when they do like St. Frances found out.

When Wheeling Park came up, FH got super sloppy on offense. Fumbles, penalties, missed assignments with different personnel. Give some credit to WP as they were getting after it on defense. I thought the FH defense responded and did well in that series as well. Neither team was punching the end zone too often.

FH defense is small and quick. Going to have challenges when facing bigger foes. But the secondary is pretty legit, well because it's those same offensive skill talents. My personal take on Stubbs - he is a DB at the next level. Still slowing down and stopping with the ball in his hand, a habit he has to break at some point. Just trust his speed. That stuff works against the out manned slower opponents but isn't so effective against quality. Willis is bigger and stronger this year and I look for him to make a splash in the yard stick stats. White is a monster fullback with speed. Just need the OL to develop.

Overall I was not dissatisfied nor overly satisfied. Just about what you would expect as a takeaway from the first outing. FH can beat every opponent they face or at least be in a position to win at the end...needs the line of scrimmage effort to show me.

To no surprise Oakdale is the big test for FH in 2021. Mountain Ridge and Old Mill will be a stiff challenge. Not sure what Hollidaysburg brings to the table. It would not surprise me to see Mountain Ridge and FH in the 1A Final Four come November. Let's just hope we get there because there is gonna be cancellations sure as you were born. Already seeing them in other states.

On a good note, COMAR waived the schedule policy again in 2021. Which means FH can pick up any team at any point in the season including their still Week 8 open date. We may end up filling it that week.

The good news in regards to Silver Oak not feilding a team, if it can get be considered good news, is that it was not virus related. It's unfortunate that Allegany was not given proper advance notice, if in fact they weren't. Silver Oak Academy has not been accepting youth into the program for at a least a month to my knowledge due to programmatic issues. So whenever a youth is released for whatever reason there is no one else coming in. They carried a max of 48 and made a proposal to double their numbers at one point but I don't think that ever happened. Given that the state is not committing juveniles as much over the past few years its surprising that the program lasted this long.
