Independent football better than conference

It''s my opinion that a complete break up of the MVAL is better news for ALCO and FH than joining a league when a large minority do not want you in the league.. I think the result would be yearly grumbling from the small Washington county teams. But Now The Cumberland schools can schedule the competitive Washington and Frederick county teams who will benefit from a great gate (mainly FH) and competitive opponent.

1. Do we really want to see Williamsport, Smithsburg, and boonsboro games .... The games would be no better that Northern, southern and Hampshire.

2.. I agree with bleedred Mountain Ridge more than likely wants nothing to do with that conference, they would rather play Garrett County schools and honestly who can blame them.

I actually think it's better if our county stays out of the MVAL and lets it fall apart... Then the scheduling nightmare is shared by all schools in the west region and we can still schedule local teams from the surrounding counties in all sports including football. if Smithsburg has 3 openings maybe they'll have to schedule Alco.....

Let's not be so quick to give up our independence to a group who really doesn't seem to want us!

Just keep in mind that you cant have it both ways. You cant complain about the Washington County schools not wanting to play you when joining the conference would solve that issue. And you also cant complain when Boonsboro and Smithsburg steal a playoff spot from someone because they "dont play anybody."

That's my exact point .... After a home and home experience with FH and ALCO the Washington County schools ( and there are more small than large) would be upset with the football asswhipping and leave the league just like the Carrol County teams did.

If you force these teams to play FH a and ALCOA it will never work .... So why even get involved with the mess that's going on now.

If FH and ALCO drop Southern, Northern, Keyser, etc... In all the others sports just to play in a football conference that does not want them they might be making a decision that haunts them in the future.

It's usually not a good decision to get involved in a situation where you are not wanted.

The grass is not greener.

stay the course and let the phone calls for games come to FH a and ALCO ... The good programs in that conference will be looking!

Unfortunately, Washington County is going to alienate themselves from everyone around. They dont want any part of Allegany or Frederick Counties. This is not a knock on Allegany but the fact that 3A South is willing to play Allegany and not Linganore tells you exactly how the scheduling philosophy is in that County. They would rather make the playoffs and get trounced in the first round than play any competition in the regular season and not get in. In reference to South, one of these years it going to backfire on them, either Alco and/or Fort Hill is going to beat them or they are going to 10-0 and not make the playoffs.

I tthink the conference is dead.

This benefits ALCO, FH, and Mountain Ridge

I think it also benefits Frederick County's smaller schools who will now have open dates for better teams than Smithsburg

Maybe I'm wrong.g

FH has three guaranteed games a year...Alco, Mountain Ridge and Keyser. In essence FH has to find seven games every year in football. They have been lucky so far keeping Chestnut Ridge. So yes, joining the MVAL makes total sense. However I do agree that just like the AMAC when it was formed, after two years of getting beat bad teams bailed in football. Even if somehow Allegany and FH joined the MVAL, it would not be long before the Washington County schools bailed in football like Frankfort, Hampshire and Northern did in the AMAC. But what does any of that matter? Worst case scenario if FH joined the MVAL, the small schools drop you eventually and FH is back to needing 7 football games a year which is where they are now. So what's the problem/risk?

The only good programs that would consider FH in the MVAL are the 3A/4A Frederick County schools. FH won't consider playing more than one of those while everyone else in their 1A region is playing Clear Spring, Smithsburg, Timber Ridge and Berkeley Springs.
