Another Homecoming in the books. Look man, we all know what Alco has had to deal with this season. It's been a nightmare of kids dropping out for various reasons on top of what was already a thin roster. Is there really such a thing as a moral victory by not having a running clock put on you? I don't think that is the question.
What really counts is that this was the best team FH has faced since Cathedral Prep. While that may not be saying a lot because the FH schedule since ECP has been horrid, what I saw on the field today from the sideline was a good sized, aggressive Alco team that came to play. Especially on the defensivie side where they have struggled so bad all year. There is some size and athleticism to work with there...to the point where yes, I agree that Alco has no business getting crushed by a Silver Oak. That one I will actually put on the coaches to some degree.
What is important to note is that this Alco team is way, way better than what I saw the few weeks after the Gallatin game. I think what happened to Alco was that the Gallatin game really crushed this season with all the injuries from that game, especially when you lose a kid like Welch who the entire offense was designed around, to the point where it took a good 3-4 weeks for the team to recover. When you lose that it's hard to recover quickly. It was good to see the Dorian kid suited up again for Alco after I thought he was lost for the year at one point.
Let's just say that today was absolutely something positive to move forward on for Alco based on what we saw from them just 3 or so weeks ago. Much, much more good stuff to look to next year with a good attitude. Let's just hope Alco can keep a JV program, because truth be told they have to keep their 9th and 10th graders involved in getting to play games during the week.
From the FH side, very vanilla stuff today. And why not really. Two TE formation, basically an 11 man scrum the entire 2nd half. Super bad coverage calls though. Alco basically scored twice, albeit after the score was already 31-0, with a 4th and 20 hail mary and a 4th and 16 hail mary with 20 seconds left. COVER TWO please!!! I don't understand why FH continually uses one safety with tight corner coverage in obvious passing situations (also see ECP game). Oh well. On the positive, fullback Carson Snyder was not going to be denied today. He deserved MVP all the way. And the FH defense didn't let Powell beat them from the pistol. If Alco ran 50 offensive plays, 40 of them were Powell taking the snap and just taking off. The FH defense did well handling this wrinkle up until the 4th quarter when it was obvious they took their foot off the gas pedal.
I don't see anyone on the FH playoff schedule the next three weeks being able to beat them. But if FH faces a team wih even skills they will need to game plan on a better level and the workhorse OL needs to bring a more dominating approach. A game like Homecoming today was a trap. Not so much they would get beat, but it was a no win situation where they had their rival with nothing to lose in a game that everyone expected to be 42-0 by halftime. If FH doesn't win by 50 points they were not good. Horrible mindset in any Homecoming game.
Onward and upward...here comes the Railroaders.
