Was at the FH vs. Mtn Ridge JV football game last night in Frostburg. Perfect weather. Really good game too. FH wound up winning 26-7 but I don't think many really cared. Think it was 14-7 at the half. MR has a really, really nice frosh QB in Patterson. Very nimble, reads well, throws well in that wide open shot gun spread system. I believe MR also has about 5-6 JV players up on varsity so I was told. But they were still pretty sound for such short amount of practice time outside of some costly penalties. Most area coaches think MR has a chance to be very solid at the varsity level this year. Some of the FH parents I chatted with last night felt MR has a chance to really have something special the next 3 years. Let's hope so.
FH is exceptionally big up front and they can move. With the 9th and 10th graders combined for this year you have a platoon system with an offense and a defense. Not even that, FH has a Red Defensive lineup and a White Defensive line up (one for size, one for speed). I think they may have an actual pass rushing specialist position on the team now, lol. The FB Welsh delivers some huge hits when he is running with the rock. Pads pop. It's cool to see the guy with the ball delivering the blow (standard Fort Hill FB mentality). Other than putting the ball on the turf a few too many times they were very fundamentally sound after just 3 weeks of practice. Took the defense about 2 quarters to adjust to a really good scrambling QB but they adjusted very well as the game progressed.
There were about 150 people in the stadium not counting participants on the field. That is what the ticket taker guy in charge of counting people told me. You could have bought a ticket at the gate at any time. With so few fans social distancing was super easy. I felt comfortable in that capacity.
Anyway, it feels good just to talk football again. If you have COVID or political thoughts please keep them on one of the other threads already doing such. To me, when I see kids making plays and hugging each other, celebrating together, having fun...that's the best part.
