Great article today in the Herald Mail about the Boonsboro-Smithsburg State Title game in 1994. To me this again highlights the need for a playoff change. This game would have never happened in our current playoff system. Can you imagine a Fort Hill-Allegany or Linganore-Urbana state title game? No matter where the game would be played, the atmosphere would be like no other.

Re: 1994 2A Final Four

I was at the FH/Dunbar game the article mentions. Both teams were 2A and 2A was loaded that year. FH was 12-0 and had beaten a really good Allegany team twice that year. That Allegany team was 10-0 against everyone else and played what I still maintain was the toughest regular season schedule in area football history. Alco played and beat Damascus, Linganore, Martinsburg, Musselman, Hollidaysburg,PA and a really good Thomas Johnson team that year. Some said that Alco team peaked around week 7 and that tough schedule took a toll with injuries. Alco barely beat Southern week 9 by a 13-8 score then lost to a loaded FH team 28-21 in Homecoming. Both teams had a really good RB, Trimble for FH and Fields for Alco. Both players shined in Homecoming but Trimble was amazing.

The Final 4 in 2A that year had 3 undefeated teams and 10-1 Allegany. Cambridge South Dorchester might have had the best 2A team in the state that year with a wide open passing attack, rare in those days. They lost to undefeated Dunbar in the semis late when Dunbar picked up a fumble and ran it for a TD. FH beat Alco in the rematch 24-14. Then in the first ever FH/Dunbar game, the battle of unbeatens went to Dunbar 30-15. School stadium was packed that night and we were all impressed with Dunbar's athletes. High school football was big time that year in Cumberland.

That Dunbar team was the best I have ever seen at stripping the ball. FH had almost 400 yds. total offense but eight turnovers (six fumbles) killed them. Tommy Polley was on that Dunbar team as well as the one the following year that beat an undefeated Churchill team for the 3A title.

Re: 1994 2A Final Four

If I recall correctly, I think Allegany went to Linganore and won that game. If it wasnt 1994, it was one of those years around then. I wasnt too old then but I do remember sitting in the stands and watching us get beat!

Re: 1994 2A Final Four

I don't think Alco barely beat Southern that year because of being beat up by injuries. FH only beat Southern that year 10-3. Southern was a tough team back then.

I was a senior on that team for Southern in 1994, and yes, we battled both Allegany and Fort Hill that year. Both contests were hard hitting and fun to be in. Southern went on to meet Boonsboro, who were the defending state champions, and lost in OT 23-16 to the Warriors. I too do not recall any major injuries for Allegany, both Fields and Walker were in that game.

Was that the same year Southern upset Martinsburg? Or was that a couple years later? Maybe 95? Southern defeated Fort Hill that year the week before Fort Hill welcomed the Dematha Stags to Greenway? Am I getting my years mixed up?

Sorry to go on a tangent, just pointing out how formidable Southern was in the mid 90s.

Re: Alco vs. Linganore

Alco also beat Linganore in 1991. That was the year Alco went on to win the 2A state title and Linganore went on to win the 3A state title. They played in the regular season and Alco won 27-13.

I believe it was a 4 year contract and Alco won in 1991 and 1994 and Linganore won in 1992 and 1993. But I don't recall where the games were played in which years. They also played in the 1986 playoffs, which Alco won 14-3. The good old days when Alco was 2A and played the big boys.

Re: Alco vs. Linganore

Maybe one day I will get my wish of getting to watch Linganore play at Greenway! And lord, I am not trying to start a scheduling argument, I think we have beat that to death. Just my wishful thinking!

1994 FH 10-3
1995 FH 21-0
1996 Southern 8-6, then Southern dropped off in ability to compete. I think Woods left sometime after. It was rumored Woods was interested in FH job after Calhoun moved on.

I was a member of the 1994 Allegany Football team that year. We never played Martinsburg that year but in week 9 against Southern Garrett we didn't take them serious and could of lost that game in Oakland. They came out to kick ass and take names later. But we came out on top in that game. Even though we got our asses chewed out by the coaches at the end of the game. The Real Battle of the Unbeatens was the 1ST Alco & FH game. High school football was big time that year in Cumberland.
