FH over Dunbar in 1A Final

Honestly, pre-season I have them all dead even. Dunbar and FH are both pretty hard to bet against in any predicted competitive game. And Alco is still Alco. They are on a mission. And they have an excellent matchup in grabbing Dunbar week 1.

I obviously saw all of FH last season, but I did get to catch the Dunbar Walkersville game last season.

Dunbar QB looks pretty formidable. His passes were just a little off against Walkersville, and he had time to throw, but his receivers did him no favors. Several dropped easy passes and several cases where the WR were definitely running the wrong routes. Possibly due to Walkserville D doing a good job of coverage. - but the QB is very legit. And he ran very well.

Their O line was huge. Always are. But they provided some excellent pass protection for the QB. The D line was pretty stout too, WHS was just a really good offense. If they lost a significant part of that line, then they have a little bit of work to do. Allegany might be a slight underdog, but one fumble or one big play could change this game dramatically.

I agree with you. This is an early August piece that may or may not be accurate. You have more information about Dunbar than me. The Alco/Dunbar game is going to be an interesting match-up.

Word on the Sun Board is that Dunbar must replace their # 1 receiver (transfer) and their entire offensive line. But I, like most, suspect they'll have no problem doing that and yes, the Dunbar Quarterback is very good. Honestly, they were totally in that semifinal game against Walkersville at Walkersville. Literally, if 1, maybe 2 plays go differently they win that game. Dunbar/Allegany, what a great way to kickoff the season.

I wish we had a better source for information on Allegany, but the best I can dig up shows that Alco loses two impact players in Milburn and Rhodes - as a receiver Rhodes was huge and Milburn played the season like a man possessed.

The Campers keep Bratton at quarterback along with Robinette, Middleton, Llewellyn, Buford and their outstanding kicker, Logsdon - not to mention most of their O/D line.

With that much of their team returning the first game should look like a mere extension of last season.

Allegany has a sophomore, that is a big time player rb. Last year he was on varsity as a freshman usually only on special teams. Has been a big threat in the youth leagues even tho Warriors still got killed by the Patriots. His off season program this last year has made him very strong and fast. He has grown and will be an impact player this year

I would also consider Kristian Robinette a lost impact player from Alco last year. Possibly the most instinctive hitting LB in the area and a 3 year starter. I would even say he was the heart of that stout Big Blue defense. Barmore was a HUGE presense on the line. Didn't he wind up signing at WV Wesleyan?

Not being a local, here is where I get confused. Ugh, #4 was Carson and #30 was Kristian, I think. I thought it was Carson who graduated (missed him as a lost impact player) and Kristian who should have one more year. But like I complained about before.... I can only glum crap from MaxPreps and that information is wanting.

I remember standing next to Barmore. That was a big man. Kristian graduated. Karson is back for his senior year. Karson was a beast at FB once he got healthy and a good LB. Kristian was a human tackling machine.

Welch is a name that will be stepping up big time

I can't tell you how refreshing it is to see some positive Alco stuff come up in the forum. I have noticed some MaxPreps inserts of up and coming Campers. It couldn't happen at a more opportune time.

Thanx! Got 'em mixed up. Yeah, the Alco backfield will be solid again this year, for sure.

Let me add that as an 8th grader, this particular student-athlete put up better times in the 100 and 200 than anyone in the history of a local track meet, and that includes some prominent student-athletes over the last 20 years.

It is also my understanding that at a recent combine he put up a #1 performance in the shuttle in his age group.

He has every bit the speed that RBs from FH have possessed in recent years.

Good luck to both FHHS and AHS.

I miss the Big Blue Review site. Any word on if that site can be taken over and updated? Jailer did such a bang up job on it!

If Alco uses him as did Appel with his talent, the young man could have an amazing touchdown to carry ratio.

The Big Blue Review site was awesome, ahead of it's time in many ways. It is still useful if you are looking for historical info. Kudos to guys like Mr. Redhead (Allegany) and our own Mr. Helmick (Fort Hill) for taking the time to "give back" to their schools with such effort.

Christian Welch the sophomore at Allegany not only is he fast, quick and strong but he is a natural player that puts in a lot of hard work. On the field he is in a zone, he will be fun to watch. On the football field he is as fast as the recent FH backs, the difference is Christian is strong he runs over defenders and is very hard to bring down.

I like your attitude - and, well, his also - but one should be realistic when you carry the ball against much bigger defenders. I am sure whatever the coach and his staff decide will be the right move. Unpredictability is a marvelous thing. If he gets 8 carries in a game and three are for touchdowns.... looks good to me. Colleges will notice early on too.

The Welch kid is a great young man and will be a big time player, he played his last year of pee wee when it was my son's first year and they don't get any better than that kid. His Mom is from here we went to school together and then they lived in North Carolina and I think the kid was also Coached well at a young age around here 90% of Pee Wee Coaches never even played football past the pee wee level. He will be fun to watch at Alco the next 3 years for sure.

Maybe Dunbar week one wasn't such a bad move after all.

AHS must have two quality sophomore backs because the young man you mentioned is not the same one I mentioned who as an 8th grade student two years ago ran faster in the 100 and 200 than anyone in the history of this local middle school track meet, including some very fast and well-established area student athletes over the last 20 years.

This same student-athlete had the best age group performance in the shuttle at a recent combine event.

Oh you are talking about Rashad Wingate. He isn't as fast or can he run like Christian on the field. He is quick, I don't think Rashad will see any varsity this year.

I've heard a lot of talk about fh not being as fast, having that one great speedster...is the consensus that alco will be quicker all around or that they may have the quickest player?

I don't think you will find a consensus around here one way or the other. Games will be played and folks will make up their own minds.

RJ Buford is fast, he did not play much last year wasn't football smart and made a lot of mental errors. This summer he got the overall MVP at a football camp at Towson. He should do real well.

He is a fine returning talent, as I previously mentioned, and is not singularly responsible for the all the drive stopping penalties or called back touchdowns that I witnessed last year.

It's high school football for cripes sake. Alco's talent, combined with reducing penalties, miscues and fumbles, could take them along way.

At least to the second game with Fort Hill!!!

I've always posted that I would personally go for a split. Give me homecoming. The FH support, the band and so forth represents Cumberland so well in the championship game.

This could be a real challenge for Big Red this year, though. You've got your 'tough nuts' to crack stacked toward the end of the season. Looks to me like FH will be recovering from things while Alco works on things.

how do you think alco stacks up against those tough nuts?

I dunno. Maybe better than FH. Maybe worse than FH. By the numbers the 'tough nuts' are ranked much better than both local schools.

My point is not who can beat whom, but that they are packed close together toward the end of the season - a point no more, no less.

I wish FH well.

I was just wondering since tough competition does have it's advantages. You don't want to limp into homecoming but is Alco going to be able to throw anything at FH that they haven't seen or are prepared for...that's my only thought.

Allegany has Northern and Southern before FH. I see them really working on their passing game to add some wrinkles, which they will need if they have any hope of beating FH. I see FH coming out of Melbourne and Friendship a bit battered, with only Ridge to help them heal.

Lest we forget, Alco/FH generally struggle to put 11 strong players on the field. This is a contact sport with a 1A body count, not chess.

It's great to see the Alco chatter here. Everyone is undefeated and optimistic. Greatest time of the year to wake up and smell that cut grass, sweat and dirty mouthpiece.

My dad tells me that when he played back in 1959 coaches deprived kids of water during August practice. Thought it made them tougher which everyone knows now ain't true but the opposite. Anyway he said the big thing to do was sneak a lemon wedge into your thigh pad and suck it in the huddle when coaches weren't looking. Said sometimes they would pass the lemon wedge around in the huddle. LOL.

When I was in action we used to put chewed bubble gum in our mouthpiece. Guess they don't do that anymore?
