Yes, a complete team...

Now all the nay sayers saying FH was just one player (and "without a mediocre team at best") now have to admit they seen a complete team effort, and complete team dominance.

An amazing 2 years in the Hill.... GO BIG RED

Two of the biggest games this year (Homecoming and title game) they had to play without that one player for about a half of each game. Most of us knew it wasnt about just one player. The kids all know its not about one player.

Very happy for all of those kids.

I hear yah... but quite frankly, Allegany gave a better accounting of themselves against FH than did Douglas. Still makes me scratch my head how Alco lost that next game after FH.... I know, the injuries... but still.

It seems cliche Lag, but Alco vs FH actually would have probably been the best overall 1A title game this year. I know they lost to Carroll, but they still play FH better than just about any other team out there.

I had a chance to listen to part and watch part of the FH championship game. It was a very impressive effort by those young men, particularly in the 2nd Half, when FH absolutely dominated.

My only caveat is calling any team in this era the best. This team deserves tons of credit for what they did this year, and I am not trying to diminish that in any way, shape or from, but some of Coach Hahn's Teams and/or Coach Lattimer's Teams would make compelling arguments as to the best FH team ever. That being said, congratulations again to FH, its players, coaches, and fans.

Matt

Douglass had an incredible run over the last 2 years in 1A. Their numbers and wins were pretty darn impressive. For FH to allow 8 points in 8 quarters against a team that thoroughly manhandled most of their opponents is a pretty awesome thing and sets a standard that will be difficult for any to follow. But it does no justice to past accomplishments to compare.

Its hard to call any particular team the best ever. Each had its own path to the finals, though Fort Hill's playoff path was literally the same as last year from the regional final on.

This Fort Hill team (though containing many players from last year) is a different team. Different line, different key roles, so it's not fair at all to compare.

There have been 4 teams at Fort hill who have proven they were the best in their class, and this is one of them in no ranking order in my opinion.

1A dynasty but not on par with FH teams of the 70's

Congrats to the 2014 Sentinels for bringing state title number 12 to the City of Cumberland. You will be champions for ever. But when fans start to compare the 2013 and 2014 teams to other FH teams from the past, please keep things in perspective. The FH team that won the 3A title in 1975 is still the best FH team ever during the playoff era. And the Hare, Manges led teams before the playoff system were much better than this team, and of course the FH teams of the 50's were dominant. So you have to keep things in perspective.

Valley won 2 state titles in 1A in the late 70's but no one ever dared to compare them to Alco or FH in that era. We used to look down on 1A (it was called class C in those days) when FH was 3A and Alco was 2A. And when Smithsburg was dominating 1A in the 80's, people in Cumberland never thought for a second that Smithsburg could beat Alco or FH. FH is the new 1A dynasty and I think they can win 3 or 4 in a row. But don't compare them to the FH teams of the 70's or the Alco teams of the 80's. Alco won six 2A titles from 78-91. And when Alco won back to back titles in 88 and 89, they beat Forestville and Damascus on that run in 2A. Alco lost one game in those two years, at Martinsburg. This FH team was never tested having to play in the old CVAL and play in hostile places like Martinsburg.

It's nice to be the king fish in a small pond like Valley was and Smithsburg was and now FH is, but there was a day when FH was the king fish in a large pond. The 73, 74, and 75 FH teams might have been the best 3 teams in consecutive years in area history. They have my vote. And I would add that you can't discard the FH teams of the 90's under Calhoun. They lost in the playoffs to 2A teams like Wheaton and Dunbar. Those teams were way better than Douglass-Baltimore. It's apples and oranges.

Re: 1A dynasty but not on par with FH teams of the 70's

Great post westernMD. This year's FH coaching staff did an excellent job keeping the team focused and motivated for the entire season. They never let them become complacent. My hat is off to the Sentinels for back-to-back titles.
