1A Scores and Schedules

Let's face it, some people are never happy with anything. If FH loses to Dunbar it's Dunbar recruits and it's not fair. If you move FH out of a class with Dunbar then the entire classification is watered down. When Dunbar beats FH nobody says it's horrible because the class is watered down. What is fair? Who decides what is right or wrong? FH brings in these supposed crowd drawing teams because it's a challenge and it's great for fans and then nobody shows up and there is an entire thread about why the population is at fault. Honestly if you can't laugh at this stuff you don't have a sense of humor. I keep saying if 1A is so bad why isn't Alco or MR winning any titles?
I get so tired of hearing about Dunbar. The advantage that Dunbar has is that anyone who lives in the city of Baltimore can go to any school of their choice. It is a fact that the better kids go to Dunbar to play football. It’s not a secret. It’s also not a secret that the Dunbar coaches encourage them to come.

I still stand by what I’ve been saying. The best Fort Hill teams beat the very best Dunbar teams. I’m talking about the years that Ty Johnson Barnes and Graves played for Fort Hill and last year in particular.

Mountain Ridge and Allegany not winning titles doesn’t mean that 1A isn’t bad. They just aren’t as good as FH. FH is a good program playing in an extremely weak classification as a result of the states greed with the 6 class system. 1A was never all that great to begin with, but it reached new levels of awful in the post pandemic years. Pointing that out isn’t a dig at FH.

What are you talking about? Go back to 4 classes and does Allegany even get in the playoffs? Cone on now.

So if this is correct, Alco's potential next 4 games would be Northern, FH, Northern, FH. Maryland playoff system with 6 classes stinks!
And for FH it also looks like Smithsburg, Alco, Smithsburg, Alco. No one wants these things. The 6 classes is worthless and watered down. One would think coaches would at least want some challenges in the regular season but that's not the case either. We live in wuss society.

Sorry but a team that goes 4-5 doesn't really deserve to be in the playoffs, even if they played a tough schedule like Allegany did this year. This format of every team gets in just sets up a lot of mercy rule games in the early rounds. Alco Northern should be competitive but do we need to see it 2 times in 3 weeks? I guess the only way to prevent this is if all the local teams play each other early in the season.
The 2003 Joppatowne Championship team would disagree with you.

I get the gist of what you're saying, but in current 1A football, playing a tough schedule (sometimes out of necessity) doesn't mean a 4-5 record should be scoffed at.

Based on the current point standings and remaining schedules I project in the second round of the playoffs:

Mountain Ridge vs. Clear Spring
Fort Hill vs. Allegany - and there is a good chance FH gets a bye in the first round, which means Alco back-to-back. Kind of takes the damper off of Homecomi.
Darn. I really feel like Alco is the 2nd best team right now.

Boons

Boonsboro plays North this week. A score to watch.

There's a thread on the MOCO board on the Brunswick head coach being removed from the job before last week's game. Some think it may have lead to the loss. Apparently he is done for the season over something he said the week before the North game.
Frederick News-Post:

Jerry Smith will not return to coach Brunswick football this season; FCPS provides no reason for removal

BRUNSWICK — Jerry Smith will not coach the Brunswick High football team for the rest of the season, according to parents of the team’s players.

Players and the rest of the coaching staff were informed of the decision to remove Smith by Frederick County Public Schools at Monday’s practice. The news was delivered to them by Brunswick principal Eric Schwarzenegger and assistant principal Laurie Atwell.

Smith’s status with the team beyond this season is unclear. A Brunswick graduate, he was in the middle of his eighth season with the team, having led it to a 48-28 record and trips to the Class 1A state quarterfinals in 2021 and state semifinals in 2022.

Equally unclear is the school system’s reason for removing a coach who is popular and well-regarded in the community.

Smith did not coach the team last week in a 28-24 loss at North Hagerstown. Assistant Rich Parry took his place.

Smith last coached the team in a 27-26 victory at Walkersville on Oct. 10, one of the Railroaders’ biggest wins in years that raised their overall record to 5-1.

When asked about Smith’s status following the Walkersville victory, FCPS cited its longstanding policy of not publicly commenting on personnel matters.

On Tuesday night, FCPS administrators, including Supervisor of Athletics and Extracurricular Activities Kevin Kendro, Brunswick athletic director Kirk Meehan, Communications Manager Brandon Oland and Schwarzenegger, met with the parents of the players, as requested, in the school’s auditorium to hear and address their concerns about Smith’s sudden removal.

But the parents came away from that meeting largely unsatisfied and still unclear as to why Smith was barred from coaching their children for the rest of this season.

“Nothing has been answered,” said Jarrett Houck, the father of the Railroaders’ star senior quarterback, Ethan Houck. “All they can tell us is it’s a personnel matter. So, they can’t answer 99 percent of our questions.”

Some parents walked out of the meeting early, visibly upset by what they heard.

Tony Baffoe, who has two sons on the team, came away wondering why they even had the meeting.

“Tell me something. Tell me what he did,” Baffoe said. “If you can’t answer my questions, then what’s the point? We are emotional because our kids are involved.”

Following the meeting, Kendro could not be reached for comment. Oland declined to comment, as did Smith, who did not attend, and Meehan.

Longtime assistant Scott Tilles will serve as the acting head coach going forward. Parry desired to return to his job as the team’s offensive line coach.

Smith, a social studies teacher at Brunswick High, missed a game last season for reasons that were never disclosed by FCPS. Parry coached the team in his place, and the Railroaders, who were unbeaten at the time, fell at home to Walkersville 55-16 on Oct. 6.

The following week, Smith returned and Brunswick beat North Hagerstown 48-14 on its way to a 7-3 season.

The parent and player support for Smith is overwhelming. There is a petition circulating online calling for his reinstatement that had attracted nearly 600 signatures by late Tuesday night.

“Any other parents in there, I can’t speak for. But I can speak for my child,” Jarrett Houck said. “He’s had a relationship with this coach for five to six years. He’s had a relationship with him as a mentor, as a coach, as a friend. That’s essentially been taken away from him and all of his teammates for what all appearances show is a personal vendetta.

Brunswick (5-2) is scheduled to face Middletown (6-1) at home at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

The parents weren’t optimistic that Tuesday night’s meeting will lead to Smith’s reinstatement.

“Our voices, I guess, were heard [by FCPS],” said Kelly Young, who has a son on the team. “They say they care about the students, and they are saying he can’t coach us for the rest of the season. It doesn’t make sense to me.”

I did not realize North Hagerstown beat Brunswick last weekend. Wow, did not see that one coming.

Without having seen any other 1A teams outside the WestMac play I thought based solely on scores comparison that the teams to push the West would be Boonsboro, Brunswick, Perryville and Cambridge. It's too hard to tell. I don't mean to dog other team's schedules but me thinks they are really on the light side east of Allegany County. But that is why it's 1A ball.

Regardless of the last two weeks of the regular season I can see two West Region teams pushing the envelope post season.
I'm calling it right now... FH and Allegany in the state championship. Would be wild!
